Central Truth

God loves us so much and calls us to love Him with all of our heart, mind, and soul in return! (Matthew 22:37)

Key Verse | John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

John 3:16–36

For God So Loved the World

16 For God so loved the world, 1 3:16 Or For this is how God loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

John the Baptist Exalts Christ

22 After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing. 23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized 24 (for John had not yet been put in prison).

25 Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew over purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” 27 John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ 29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.” 2 3:30 Some interpreters hold that the quotation continues through verse 36

31 He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. 33 Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. 34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Dive Deeper | John 3:16–36

I know what you're thinking: "John 3:16 is the most cliché verse in the Bible. Why don't you tell me something I don't already know?"

If that is what you are thinking, will you please put that thought aside and break this verse down with me? It is still God's Word, and even though it may be the most recognized verse in the Bible, it is the best news we will ever hear: God loves YOU so much (more than you could ever fathom), and He sent His only Son to die for you so that you can have eternal life with Him!

That is GOOD NEWS right there!

Just think, if everyone who knows John 3:16 actually believed it and lived it out, how much different would our society be? Even if you already know the verse by heart, will you commit to truly meditate on it and allow the Holy Spirit to teach you something new today?

This familiar verse is easy to read, but it's hard to fully comprehend. The thing is, what you think about God is one of the most important things about you. Who do you say He is? Believing forms a deep dependence on God and how He transforms your life. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that knowing about Him is the same thing as believing in Him. James reminds us that “[e]ven the demons believe—and shudder!” (James 2:19b)

A reliable litmus test for your faith is whether your words and actions line up. What does your typical day look like? Are you spending 10 minutes with God and the other 23 hours and 50 minutes doing what you want to do, listening to what you want to listen to, and watching what you want to watch? Is Christianity an accessory for you? Or is your faith in Christ transforming everything about you? Does the way you live your life show you truly believe that God loves even you?

I challenge/encourage you to remind at least three people today how much Jesus loves them!

Discussion Questions

1. If someone walked up to you right now and asked you what it meant when people talk about something called "the gospel," how would you answer? Do you have an understanding of the gospel that enables you to communicate it clearly to others?

2. Do you truly believe the gospel is enough? Enough for salvation? Enough for transforming your life? Enough for guiding the way in which you serve others?

3. What does it look like for you to actually live out the gospel today? How will you be in the world and not of the world by being set apart?
