Central Truth

Matthew 5-7 records the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus is speaking to believers/learners and begins with the Beatitudes, describing what believers already are in Christ, then moving to what this looks like in a believer's life by describing how we are to be salt and light to an unbelieving world.

Key Verse | Matthew 5:13–14

"You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden." (Matthew 5:13-14)

Matthew 5:13–20

Salt and Light

13 You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that 1 5:16 Or house. 16Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law

17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Dive Deeper | Matthew 5:13–20

“There never was a better hunting dog. Lost both my dogs in the same day, will miss them greatly . . . .” That was my youngest son’s Instagram post the day we lost both our dogs to a tragic accident.

Apparently, our neighbors were beekeepers, which had never been a problem until the day their housed 100,000+ bees became agitated, and the beekeeper, without knowing it, caused them to swarm. She was in her gear, so she was safe; but our dogs were not so fortunate.

Matthew 5 records the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus speaks not of what disciples ought to become, but of what they already are—e.g., as the Baker Commentary on the Bible points out, those who evidence the qualities celebrated in the Beatitudes.

Our Aussie didn’t survive, but Steve went by himself to the vet to see our Lab, Doak. What he didn’t know was that the beekeeper had been sitting in the office since her husband and she had brought Doak in and wouldn’t leave until she knew whether he would live. Everyone in the office knew who she was except Steve.

After saying goodbye to Doak, he headed out to the lobby. Every face in the office gathered at the appointment window to see what would happen next. The woman stood to address Steve to apologize. Steve looked at her grief-stricken face and said, “We live in a fallen world. I’m not mad at you or the bees. Do I wish I had my dogs back? Yes. But I’m not mad at you.” The woman burst into tears as Steve tried to console her.

Salt and light permeated that dark morning as the “offended” comforted the “offender”; and again as her husband came to the door to thank Steve for the kindness shown his wife; and again as Steve made sure there would be no further repercussions against the family. Salt stopped any further decay, and light reigned as the gospel was shared and modeled to unbelievers. A proper understanding of the grace that we as believers have received enables us to be salt and light, regardless of the situation.

Discussion Questions

1. Do you consider yourself salt and light to an unbelieving world? Why or why not? Would the Lord agree?

2. Now ask the question above again, but in reference to your own home and those you hang with. Would they and the Lord agree?

3. In what ways are you being salt and light to those in need? In what ways can you do better? Be specific.

4. Will you pray and ask the Lord to show you how to begin or to strengthen this area of your Christian walk?
