Central Truth

God has sent prophets, priests, and even ordinary people to proclaim that Jesus is the Son of God who can forgive us of our sins and give us eternal life. We must embrace this truth and hold fast to our faith in Jesus in order to endure storms of life.

Key Verse | Mark 12:10

"Have you not read this Scripture:
'The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.'"
(Mark 12:10)

Mark 12:1–12

The Parable of the Tenants

And he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and leased it to tenants and went into another country. When the season came, he sent a servant 1 12:2 Or bondservant; also verse 4 to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed. Again he sent to them another servant, and they struck him on the head and treated him shamefully. And he sent another, and him they killed. And so with many others: some they beat, and some they killed. He had still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ And they took him and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard. What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not read this Scripture:

‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone; 2 12:10 Greek the head of the corner

11  this was the Lord's doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”

12 And they were seeking to arrest him but feared the people, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away.

Dive Deeper | Mark 12:1–12

Strong. Stable. Rock solid. These are words that we hope describe the foundations of our houses. Why? Because we want these structures to be able to stand even in the midst of storms. What about the foundations of our lives? Can we say that our lives are built upon a faith that is strong enough to help us endure the fiercest storms?

One of the most difficult times in my life took place several weeks before my high school graduation. I had just finished baseball practice when I received the news that my younger sister was involved in a horse riding accident. After arriving at the hospital, my parents and I were told that my sister had sustained severe brain damage. We hit our knees and prayed along with the friends and family members crowded in the hospital hallways. While we knew that God could heal her, He did not. Within a few days, my sister slowly passed away.

Suddenly, my academic records, athletic accolades, and career plans seemed worthless. The sobering truth of my sister’s death compelled me to rely on the one thing I knew was eternal: my faith in Jesus. I found peace after my sister’s death because I knew she was in heaven. She had asked God to forgive her sins, and she believed that Jesus was the perfect Son of God who bore God’s wrath against sin on the cross and showed God’s power over sin in His resurrection from the dead. Even at 11 years old, my sister lived her life based upon her faith in Jesus.

Looking back at this time in my life, I am reminded that this world is temporary and that many of the goals I am tempted to pursue lack eternal value. Money is not transferable after death. Power and influence will fade away. Trophies and accolades will gather dust. Only Jesus remains when our time on the earth expires. Let’s build our lives upon Jesus, the cornerstone of our faith.

Discussion Questions

1. What are some reasons that people give for rejecting Jesus?

2. Do you place your faith in Jesus alone? If so, how has your faith in Jesus helped you endure challenges in life? If not, what is keeping you from placing your faith in Jesus?

3. What are some ways that you have experienced God's peace in your life? How can you share your story with others to encourage them to pursue Jesus?
