Central Truth

Obedience. Obedience used to make me think of a drill sergeant. But obedience to Jesus is ALWAYS worth it. Zero regrets.

Key Verse |

And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him. (Mark 2:14)

Mark 2:13–22

Jesus Calls Levi

13 He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them. 14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.

15 And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 And the scribes of 1 2:16 Some manuscripts and the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat 2 2:16 Some manuscripts add and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

A Question About Fasting

18 Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him, “Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” 19 And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. 20 The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. 21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.” 3 2:22 Some manuscripts omit But new wine is for fresh wineskins

Dive Deeper | Mark 2:13–22

Shortly into today's reading, Mark 2:14 stood out to me. It's okay to tap the brakes and let one verse penetrate your heart, so that’s what I’m going to do.

Tax collectors: Who are they? It's what Matthew (Levi) was before he became a disciple of Jesus. Jewish tax collectors were associated with sinners (verse 15). Jews hated all the "Matthews" out there. Traitors. Cheaters. Wicked publicans who taxed their own people to advance the Roman empire. Matthew didn't have much going for him until Jesus said, "Follow me." Sound familiar? That's my story. I didn't have much going for me until Jesus called me out of my shame and guilt from my lustful lifestyle, insecurity, and misplaced identity. So, I get it. I understand Matthew's response. Did you notice it? Without blinking, "[Matthew] rose and followed him." (verse 14)

Obedience. Matthew didn't know Jesus, but Jesus knew Matthew. That's how I felt when Jesus called me. I felt known and loved. I understood the immense love that Jesus has for me. When a good shepherd says, "Follow me," the sheep follow him. His command is good, kind, and always worth obeying.

Today, I have a choice to follow Christ or follow Chris. My best days are marked with Christ, and my worst days are marked with Chris. To be the best husband to my beautiful bride, I must follow Jesus without reservation. Our Good Shepherd reminds me in John 10:10 that the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but He comes to give us abundant life. Friends . . . that's NOW. The abundant life is now.

Obedience is your friend. Safe travels.

Discussion Questions

1. Why in the world are we so stubborn? Or was that just me? Why do we generally have a hard time obeying? (Think speed limit, stop signs, directions.)

2. If a 30-year-old man walked into your office and said, "Follow me," would you get up immediately? Likely not . . . so do you think the Holy Spirit had something to do with Matthew's quick obedience?

3. In today's world, take some time to ponder obedience to Jesus vs. obedience to man. What if they are in conflict? Who do you obey then?
