Central Truth

God is good all the time, and He alone is the thing we can hang our trust on.

Key Verse | Psalm 62:8

Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us.
(Psalm 62:8)

Psalm 62

My Soul Waits for God Alone

To the choirmaster: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

For God alone my soul waits in silence;
    from him comes my salvation.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.

How long will all of you attack a man
    to batter him,
    like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
They only plan to thrust him down from his high position.
    They take pleasure in falsehood.
They bless with their mouths,
    but inwardly they curse. Selah

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your heart before him;
    God is a refuge for us. Selah

Those of low estate are but a breath;
    those of high estate are a delusion;
in the balances they go up;
    they are together lighter than a breath.
10  Put no trust in extortion;
    set no vain hopes on robbery;
    if riches increase, set not your heart on them.

11  Once God has spoken;
    twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
12      and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.
For you will render to a man
    according to his work.

Dive Deeper | Psalm 62

I love this psalm because it reminds me to trust in God ALL the time, not just when things are going well. I’ve struggled with this concept when trouble has come, resulting in hurt for me and for my relationships. It’s caused stress for me and for others around me. When trouble comes, whether it’s from the world around me or from the battle within me (sin), I surely will falter if I take my focus off God.

David, however, focuses on God in the midst of trouble and remembers that God is the source of his salvation (verse 1). As a result, God alone is his rock, his salvation, and his fortress (verses 2 and 6) when the world around him tries to bring him down (verses 3-4). He stays focused on what’s true in verses 1-2.

David also reminds us not to put our hope in people or things of this world. Both are like vapor. Whether it’s money, power, or even people, it is fleeting. Twenty-five years ago, I was putting my trust in people, and I thought being the life of the party, the funny and crazy guy, was where I would find my value. I had lost my focus on my rock and fortress. It wasn’t until I let go of the control and trusted in God’s plan for me that I experienced peace in following Him. God is faithful and knows what He’s doing. He blessed me with my beautiful wife Kendra, whom, if I had stuck to my plan, I would never have met.

David encourages us to be all-in: "Trust in God at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us." (Verse 8) We must keep our focus, and we do this by daily time in the Word, in prayer, and in community.
