Central Truth

The Bible shows us that we can trust God in fulfilling His promises, though likely not in the way or with the timing we hope for. Despite what He has shown us in our own lives to demonstrate this, we sometimes give in to fear, doubt, or discontentment while waiting on His timing.

Key Verse | Psalm 70:4

May all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you!
May those who love your salvation
say evermore, "God is great!"
(Psalm 70:4)

Psalm 70

O LORD, Do Not Delay

To the choirmaster. Of David, for the memorial offering.

Make haste, O God, to deliver me!
    O LORD, make haste to help me!
Let them be put to shame and confusion
    who seek my life!
Let them be turned back and brought to dishonor
    who delight in my hurt!
Let them turn back because of their shame
    who say, “Aha, Aha!”

May all who seek you
    rejoice and be glad in you!
May those who love your salvation
    say evermore, “God is great!”
But I am poor and needy;
    hasten to me, O God!
You are my help and my deliverer;
    O LORD, do not delay!

Dive Deeper | Psalm 70

There was a time in my life when I prayed desperate prayers, but despite the clarity and urgency with which I prayed, I didn’t pray with certainty that God could or would change things. Therefore, I wasn’t willing to do what God was asking on my part. David’s prayer is urgent, yet he prays with certainty that God will deliver. David shows us several things that we should do while we wait, so that our waiting is growing our faith in Him.

Pray honest prayers. “Make haste, O God, to deliver me! O Lord, make haste to help me!” (Psalm 70:1). David is pleading with God. He knows that God knows the outcome, yet he prays in an honest and direct way. “[T]he eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer.” (1 Peter 3:12a)
Seek Him fervently. “May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you!” (Psalm 70:4a). This idea is referenced many other times in Scripture when facing trying circumstances. “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13)
Praise Him as we focus on an eternal perspective. Psalm 70:4 continues, “May those who love your salvation say evermore, 'God is great!'” No matter how drastic, our situation is temporary in light of eternity. Be encouraged by Colossians 3:2 to: “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”
Remind ourselves of who He is. “You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord, do not delay!” (Psalm 70:5) When we truly believe this is who God is, we can pray confidently and wait contentedly on His timing.

2 Peter 3:9 assures us, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” If you are in a season in which you feel like God is delaying, be reminded that His timing is perfect and that His delay is for a reason.
