Central Truth

World leaders should provide justice for everyone. When they forget this, they forget they are mortal men. One day, they will die, and God will judge them. As Christians, we are all leaders.

Key Verse | Psalm 82:1

God has taken his place in the divine council;
in the midst of the gods he holds judgment.
(Psalm 82:1)

Psalm 82

Rescue the Weak and Needy

A Psalm of Asaph.

God has taken his place in the divine council;
    in the midst of the gods he holds judgment:
“How long will you judge unjustly
    and show partiality to the wicked? Selah
Give justice to the weak and the fatherless;
    maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.
Rescue the weak and the needy;
    deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

They have neither knowledge nor understanding,
    they walk about in darkness;
    all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

I said, “You are gods,
    sons of the Most High, all of you;
nevertheless, like men you shall die,
    and fall like any prince.” 1 82:7 Or fall as one man, O princes

Arise, O God, judge the earth;
    for you shall inherit all the nations!

Dive Deeper | Psalm 82

Before accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, I never put much thought into what a leader was or what it took to be a good one. To me, a leader was my supervisor at work or the President of the United States. I wasn't a leader and had no desire to be one.  I now know that my opinion was pretty limited. When I started attending Watermark in 2009, I saw a much different view of a leader. I heard this view in the sermons on Sunday, read about it in the Word, but most importantly saw it in the members of the church. From Bible study to volunteer opportunities, people were happily giving their time.

The first time I jumped in was to paint a school classroom in West Dallas. Since then, I have volunteered with several ministries. The ministries all have something in common—they bring glory to God and help the less fortunate.

In 2014, I was asked to be the captain of a greeting team for a Sunday service at Watermark. This is where God started teaching me about being a leader. In this role, I need to be a teacher, mentor, listener, motivator, and supervisor. This experience has crossed over into my everyday life (as it should). I try to apply these skills when sharing my faith with friends, coworkers, and people I interact with daily. I'm amazed how a brief, loving conversation can help those who don’t know Jesus start to change their way of thinking.

One day, I'll stand in front of our Lord for my judgment. I pray that I will hear, "Good job, my son." Until that day comes, I will continue to strive to be a leader who brings glory to our Lord.
