Central Truth

Life can sometimes feel like you’re running on a treadmill. You end up out of breath, but you didn’t get anywhere. God wants to take us on the run of our lives through hills and turns that point to His goodness and love.

Key Verse |

O you who love the Lord, hate evil!
He preserves the lives of his saints;
He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
Light is sown for the righteous,
and joy for the upright in heart.
(Psalms‬ ‭97:10-11‬)

Psalm 97

The LORD Reigns

The LORD reigns, let the earth rejoice;
    let the many coastlands be glad!
Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;
    righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
Fire goes before him
    and burns up his adversaries all around.
His lightnings light up the world;
    the earth sees and trembles.
The mountains melt like wax before the LORD,
    before the Lord of all the earth.

The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
    and all the peoples see his glory.
All worshipers of images are put to shame,
    who make their boast in worthless idols;
    worship him, all you gods!

Zion hears and is glad,
    and the daughters of Judah rejoice,
    because of your judgments, O LORD.
For you, O LORD, are most high over all the earth;
    you are exalted far above all gods.

10  O you who love the LORD, hate evil!
    He preserves the lives of his saints;
    he delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

12  Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous,
    and give thanks to his holy name!

Dive Deeper | Psalm 97

We could stop Psalm 97 with verse 1: “The LORD reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad!” It can seem like an impossible command or flippant response in times of hurt, trials, and struggles, but the rest of Psalm 97 shows why we can be glad. Verse 2 identifies God as a righteous judge. His throne sits on justice and truth. Verses 3 through 5 display His strength. Jesus mentioned in Matthew 17 that the disciples could move a mountain if they had faith like a mustard seed. Here in verse 5 it is said of Him that the mountains melt like wax before Him. In verses 6 through 9, we read of His authority and glory.

I’ve been in a long season of trials that God is making into a season of growth and refinement. I believe Romans 8:28; He uses everything for good. As I’m teaching my 1½ year olds, God’s promises are true. I can trust His sovereignty in my circumstances. I can trust because I believe His Word, but I can also believe because I remember His faithfulness. In 1997 I was depressed and running on the treadmill of performance, people-pleasing, and control. God called me to step off that treadmill and onto His path, orchestrating my surrender of doing things my way. It was the beginning of my acceptance that my life had value, purpose, and worth beyond any accomplishment or praise I desperately sought.

I learned to love the One who loved me deeply and erase the lies from Satan who nearly convinced me I wasn’t good enough for God’s love (or anyone's, for that matter). God delivered me from the hand of the truly wicked one and gave me a purpose: to glorify Him. The race still has hard parts, but the victory is sweeter at each mile marker I pass because I kept going and didn't give in to defeat. Oh no, not I; I will survive the trials. Therefore I can follow verse 2 and rejoice, praising His Holy Name!
