Central Truth

God’s Word offers rich jewels of truth, promises, and peace for our daily lives. The psalmist finds hope in God's Word, rest in His promises, and is revived by His truths. Those treasures are available to all who open and trust God's Word!

Key Verse | Psalm 119:151

But you are near, O Lord,
and all your commandments are true.
(Psalm 119:151)

Psalm 119:145–152

Qoph

145  With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O LORD!
    I will keep your statutes.
146  I call to you; save me,
    that I may observe your testimonies.
147  I rise before dawn and cry for help;
    I hope in your words.
148  My eyes are awake before the watches of the night,
    that I may meditate on your promise.
149  Hear my voice according to your steadfast love;
    O LORD, according to your justice give me life.
150  They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose;
    they are far from your law.
151  But you are near, O LORD,
    and all your commandments are true.
152  Long have I known from your testimonies
    that you have founded them forever.

Dive Deeper | Psalm 119:145–152

When my daughters were young, visiting the pediatrician was rewarded with a dig in the treasure chest at the end of whatever treatment they had to endure. The treasure chest was filled with sparkly trinkets, lollypops, toys, and other goodies. If I could get them focused on the treasures awaiting, rather than the treatment at hand, those pediatrician visits went so much better!

Psalm 119 reminds us of the treasures awaiting in God’s Word. Riches abound there—beautiful promises, peace, rest, hope, and the ultimate gift of eternal life with Him. But to understand and enjoy those promises, we have to open the treasure chest.

When we understand that God’s Word is the revelation of His nature, we see His love extended in it. When we follow the Word of God and eagerly seek to be more like Jesus every day, we find our lives filled with jewels like joy and peace. Then when we endure the trials of life, we can rejoice because we know God is on our side, and He will see us through. In fact, the very trials we face help prepare us to live with Him in eternity.

So how hungry are we for the Word of God? The psalmist lived his days in prayer to and relationship with the Father. Even at night, the psalmist seems to have been eager to awake and meditate on God’s promises. Are we staying awake at night worrying about tomorrow? Or knocking ourselves out with medications so we avoid awakening at night? Or are we finding joy in those sleepless moments meditating on God’s promises (verse 148).

God’s Word is a treasure chest offering rich jewels of truth, promises, and peace for our lives. The problem comes when we trust other men or ourselves more than we depend on the divine Master. As the psalmist says in verse 151, “But you are near, O Lord, and all your commandments are true.” Let’s focus on His Word, feel His closeness, rest in His promises, and be revived by His truths! Treasure awaits us . . .
