Central Truth

Read the Bible; ask the hard, awkward questions; memorize Scripture; and continually dig for God's truth. Wisdom and understanding—and a right view of who God is—will be yours.

Key Verse | Proverbs 2:3–5

[Y]es, if you call out for insight
and raise your voice for understanding,
if you seek it like silver
and search for it as for hidden treasures,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
(Proverbs 2:3-5)

Proverbs 2:1–15

The Value of Wisdom

My son, if you receive my words
    and treasure up my commandments with you,
making your ear attentive to wisdom
    and inclining your heart to understanding;
yes, if you call out for insight
    and raise your voice for understanding,
if you seek it like silver
    and search for it as for hidden treasures,
then you will understand the fear of the LORD
    and find the knowledge of God.
For the LORD gives wisdom;
    from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;
he stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
    he is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
guarding the paths of justice
    and watching over the way of his saints.
Then you will understand righteousness and justice
    and equity, every good path;
10  for wisdom will come into your heart,
    and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;
11  discretion will watch over you,
    understanding will guard you,
12  delivering you from the way of evil,
    from men of perverted speech,
13  who forsake the paths of uprightness
    to walk in the ways of darkness,
14  who rejoice in doing evil
    and delight in the perverseness of evil,
15  men whose paths are crooked,
    and who are devious in their ways.

Dive Deeper | Proverbs 2:1–15

Last year, my anxiety levels had me acting like a crazed cat.

I came to know and trust the Lord early on in life. But I was thrown by the reality I was seeing in the world—a crazy mess of war, natural disasters, brutality, and hate. Even Christians were behaving badly, and I found myself regularly asking, "What's up with that?"

I listened to some great Bible teachers at the Watermark Women's Bible Study talk about Watermark's re:generation recovery ministry. Hearing what they said motivated me to investigate re:gen for myself. As I write this Journey devotional, I have completed six months of its 12-month introspective Bible study; and by the time you read it, I will have completed re:gen, Lord willing. Through it, my heart is being trained, yet again, to filter personal, community, city, national, and world troubles through the eternal lens of biblical truth. Getting together regularly with people who genuinely "cry out" for discernment and wisdom brings hope and peace.

God teaches me what is right, just, and fair, and His Word shows me the way to go. Better yet, wisdom from Jesus Christ protects me from falling in with or being overwhelmed by people who practice evil. The Bible untangles man's twisted logic and lights up safe and morally correct paths.

Discussion Questions

1. Do you read the Bible and discuss it with men, women, and children who truly love Jesus?

2. Do you know that there is a safe place to ask difficult questions about Christian beliefs?

3. God did not intend for you to seek wisdom alone. Find a friend and a church who love Jesus Christ and the Bible today!
