Central Truth

A good name is to be well-spoken of while having the reputation as a person who honors his word. To have a rich name is to invest in the well-being of others. Be kind, be willing to serve, teach God's Word, give unconditionally, and try new things without fear of failure.

Key Verse | Proverbs 22:1

A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,
and favor is better than silver or gold.
(Proverbs 22:1)

Proverbs 22:1–16

A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,
    and favor is better than silver or gold.
The rich and the poor meet together;
    the LORD is the Maker of them all.
The prudent sees danger and hides himself,
    but the simple go on and suffer for it.
The reward for humility and fear of the LORD
    is riches and honor and life. 1 22:4 Or The reward for humility is the fear of the LORD, riches and honor and life
Thorns and snares are in the way of the crooked;
    whoever guards his soul will keep far from them.
Train up a child in the way he should go;
    even when he is old he will not depart from it.
The rich rules over the poor,
    and the borrower is the slave of the lender.
Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity,
    and the rod of his fury will fail.
Whoever has a bountiful 2 22:9 Hebrew good eye will be blessed,
    for he shares his bread with the poor.
10  Drive out a scoffer, and strife will go out,
    and quarreling and abuse will cease.
11  He who loves purity of heart,
    and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend.
12  The eyes of the LORD keep watch over knowledge,
    but he overthrows the words of the traitor.
13  The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside!
    I shall be killed in the streets!”
14  The mouth of forbidden 3 22:14 Hebrew strange women is a deep pit;
    he with whom the LORD is angry will fall into it.
15  Folly is bound up in the heart of a child,
    but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.
16  Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth,
    or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.

Dive Deeper | Proverbs 22:1–16

Hello, my name is: daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and, above all, child of God; not because I say so, but because my actions speak louder than my words.

It is a great principle to live by: if we are known by our name, then we should intentionally build a fruitful platform so that we will be favored by the Lord. "Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!" (Psalm 90:17)

I've been told that lessons will be repeated until they are learned. I know this is true because I have repeated many, many, many lessons/mistakes just because I was stubborn and wanted to do it my way. Now, I know that learning lessons starts in our growth process. God desires us to grow in character, grow in wisdom, and, ultimately, model Christlikeness. Our goal is to learn right (God's Word) from wrong (worldly influences).

Knowing God's Word will allow us to identify and to stay away from danger, recognizing scoffers and traitors, so that we can avoid (some) suffering and strife. "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:2)

It is estimated that we remember:

5% of what we hear
15% of what we read
35% of what we study
100% of what we memorize

Based on those statistics, it is to our benefit to commit God's Word to memory. I learned that faithfully in Equipped Disciple 1, 2, and 3!

When God is our center, we can see the benefit in sharing His Word. By sharing God's truth, we are able to grow into spiritual adulthood and will find favor in training new believers to raise them up. "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6)
