Central Truth

In seasons of identity crisis, the pronouns by which we categorize our existence are important. We can define ourselves as “Who I am to others,” “What I do,” or “Where I live or serve.” Or we can define ourselves by that which is most important, "Whose I am” and “Whom I Serve.”

Key Verse | 1 Chronicles 9:1

So all Israel was listed in the genealogical records in The Book of the Kings of Israel. The people of Judah were exiled to Babylon because they were unfaithful to the Lord. (1 Chronicles 9:1)

Dive Deeper | 1 Chronicles 1–9

1 Chronicles 1-9 serves as a veritable “Who’s Who” in the Davidic line, the genealogy of Christ. Commentaries state that this passage would have been read after the Israelites were captured and taken into exile by the Babylonians. Suffering in captivity and being away from their land undoubtedly caused despair, frustration, and anxiety. The genealogies were necessary to the exiles because they not only served as a reminder of “who” they were, from “whom” they came, and the “what” they were waiting for—the promise of salvation by way of the Messiah who was to come.

But what does it mean for us today? This passage illustrates God cannot deny “who” He is, The Holy One of Israel. We see that God’s plans reflect His character. He is sovereign and just, He loves and cares for us individually, and He has provided a way of salvation for us through His son, Jesus Christ. First, we notice the sovereignty of God. He designed a great plan that would carry out His design for the salvation of those who trust in Him that would bring glory to Himself. As we read the genealogy, we read about generation after generation of His chosen people, other nations, kings and lands, wars, battles, and living amidst wanderings, obedience, and disobedience, and yet God's sovereign plan prevails.

Second, this passage calls attention to the fact that God is just. He honors the faithful, the ones that are obedient to Him. God was faithful to those who honored him, giving land and victory in battle (see examples in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10, 5:20, 6:56). He punishes the evil, the ones turn away from Him. The consequences of their sin do not go unnoticed. In 1 Chronicles 2:3, Ruben's son, Er, is mentioned: "But the Lord saw that the oldest son, Er, was a wicked man, so he killed him." More examples follow in 1 Chronicles 5:25-26 and 9:1.

Third, God’s plan for salvation includes us. As a loving father, He cares for His people collectively and intimately as individuals. God desires a relationship with each of us. In Him, there is hope.

Discussion Questions

1. Are you suffering from an Israelite Identity Crisis? In “whom, what or where” have you placed your trust? Do you need a reminder of “whose” you are? Take time to ask God to reveal where you’ve mistakenly placed your identity and ask Him to restore your heart to its rightful place, resting and abiding fully in Him.

2. Over the course of the first nine chapters, the writer of Chronicles “calls out” several individuals for their faithfulness, boldness in prayer, obedience, or disobedience. What were the circumstances of these individuals’ lives? How did God reward or punish them for their faithfulness or unfaithfulness to Him?

3. Chapters 6 and 9 describe details regarding preparation for worship in the temple. How can you prepare your heart, mind, soul, and spirit for worship and service to the Lord this week? This month? This year? What distraction needs to be removed? What spiritual disciplines need to be added?
