Central Truth

When we seek God and His ways in all we do, we will receive magnificent blessing and prosperity through God using us in His divinely orchestrated plan.

Key Verse | Psalm 1:1–2

Oh, the joys of those who do not
follow the advice of the wicked,
or stand around with sinners,
or join in with mockers.
But they delight in the law of the Lord,
meditating on it day and night.
(Psalm 1:1-2)

Psalms 1–6

Book One

The Way of the Righteous and the Wicked

Blessed is the man 1 1:1 The singular Hebrew word for man (ish) is used here to portray a representative example of a godly person; see Preface
    who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
    nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law 2 1:2 Or instruction of the LORD,
    and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree
    planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
    and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so,
    but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
    nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
    but the way of the wicked will perish.

The Reign of the LORD's Anointed

Why do the nations rage 3 2:1 Or nations noisily assemble
    and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
    and the rulers take counsel together,
    against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying,
“Let us burst their bonds apart
    and cast away their cords from us.”

He who sits in the heavens laughs;
    the Lord holds them in derision.
Then he will speak to them in his wrath,
    and terrify them in his fury, saying,
“As for me, I have set my King
    on Zion, my holy hill.”

I will tell of the decree:
The LORD said to me, “You are my Son;
    today I have begotten you.
Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
    and the ends of the earth your possession.
You shall break 4 2:9 Revocalization yields (compare Septuagint) You shall rule them with a rod of iron
    and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.”

10  Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
    be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11  Serve the LORD with fear,
    and rejoice with trembling.
12  Kiss the Son,
    lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
    for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Save Me, O My God

A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son.

O LORD, how many are my foes!
    Many are rising against me;
many are saying of my soul,
    “There is no salvation for him in God.” Selah 5 3:2 The meaning of the Hebrew word Selah, used frequently in the Psalms, is uncertain. It may be a musical or liturgical direction

But you, O LORD, are a shield about me,
    my glory, and the lifter of my head.
I cried aloud to the LORD,
    and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah

I lay down and slept;
    I woke again, for the LORD sustained me.
I will not be afraid of many thousands of people
    who have set themselves against me all around.

Arise, O LORD!
    Save me, O my God!
For you strike all my enemies on the cheek;
    you break the teeth of the wicked.

Salvation belongs to the LORD;
    your blessing be on your people! Selah

Answer Me When I Call

To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.

Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness!
    You have given me relief when I was in distress.
    Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!

O men, 6 4:2 Or O men of rank how long shall my honor be turned into shame?
    How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah
But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself;
    the LORD hears when I call to him.

Be angry, 7 4:4 Or Be agitated and do not sin;
    ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah
Offer right sacrifices,
    and put your trust in the LORD.

There are many who say, “Who will show us some good?
    Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD!”
You have put more joy in my heart
    than they have when their grain and wine abound.

In peace I will both lie down and sleep;
    for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

Lead Me in Your Righteousness

To the choirmaster: for the flutes. A Psalm of David.

Give ear to my words, O LORD;
    consider my groaning.
Give attention to the sound of my cry,
    my King and my God,
    for to you do I pray.
O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice;
    in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you 8 5:3 Or I direct my prayer to you and watch.

For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
    evil may not dwell with you.
The boastful shall not stand before your eyes;
    you hate all evildoers.
You destroy those who speak lies;
    the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
    will enter your house.
I will bow down toward your holy temple
    in the fear of you.
Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness
    because of my enemies;
    make your way straight before me.

For there is no truth in their mouth;
    their inmost self is destruction;
their throat is an open grave;
    they flatter with their tongue.
10  Make them bear their guilt, O God;
    let them fall by their own counsels;
because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out,
    for they have rebelled against you.

11  But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
    let them ever sing for joy,
and spread your protection over them,
    that those who love your name may exult in you.
12  For you bless the righteous, O LORD;
    you cover him with favor as with a shield.

O LORD, Deliver My Life

To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments; according to The Sheminith. 9 6:1 Probably a musical or liturgical term A Psalm of David.

O LORD, rebuke me not in your anger,
    nor discipline me in your wrath.
Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am languishing;
    heal me, O LORD, for my bones are troubled.
My soul also is greatly troubled.
    But you, O LORD—how long?

Turn, O LORD, deliver my life;
    save me for the sake of your steadfast love.
For in death there is no remembrance of you;
    in Sheol who will give you praise?

I am weary with my moaning;
    every night I flood my bed with tears;
    I drench my couch with my weeping.
My eye wastes away because of grief;
    it grows weak because of all my foes.

Depart from me, all you workers of evil,
    for the LORD has heard the sound of my weeping.
The LORD has heard my plea;
    the LORD accepts my prayer.
10  All my enemies shall be ashamed and greatly troubled;
    they shall turn back and be put to shame in a moment.

Dive Deeper | Psalms 1–6

Since I first came to know Christ, I have slowly progressed from trudging through the Psalms to cherishing the Psalms. Written by at least seven authors over 1,000 years, the book of Psalms is a diverse jewel about creation, wisdom, suffering, hope, our Messiah, and the sovereignty of God.

Psalm 1 appropriately starts with a fork in the road that every person faces—the choice between pursuing righteousness or evil. In the first two verses, the psalmist clearly notes that a righteous person can be identified by the following truths in his life: he does not “do life” with the ungodly, he delights in God’s Word, and he reflects on God’s Word in all of life. The psalmist also states the benefits showered on the righteous who live according to God’s Word: blessing, fruit, and prosperity. STOP! Did I just say obedience leads to blessing and prosperity? Am I agreeing with prosperity preachers and televangelists?

No! But I do believe obedience to God leads to immense blessing and prosperity. There is nothing more beautiful and perfect than God’s will unfolding, and when I joyfully seek, learn, and live according to God’s Word, I know I am doing God’s will. I am prospering. God is blessing me for my obedience, and the blessing is God using me for His will!

Please read Acts 7. It is a great picture of why the prosperity theology espoused at many churches is simply another false religion—no more biblical than Islam, Atheism, or Hinduism. In Acts, Stephen avoids everything God tells us to avoid in Psalm 1:1, and he does everything God tells us to do in Psalm 1:2. He is obedient, and God blesses Stephen by allowing him to be an instrument of God’s perfect plan. In Acts 7:54-60, Stephen becomes the first Christian martyr. How is this part of God’s perfect plan? Read the ensuing verses in Acts 8:1-4, and we see Stephen’s persecution led to broader persecution and a scattering of the Christians. How is that God’s will? See Acts 1:8. God is sovereign. May the true form of prosperity theology advance until Christ returns!

Discussion Questions

1. Psalm 1:1 tells us not to “follow the advice of the wicked.” When you need to make decisions in life, who are the people you regularly turn to for counsel? Is each of them a godly Christian who seeks, knows, and applies God’s Word?

2. Psalm 1:2 tells us that the righteous meditate on God’s Word day and night. Over the past week, have you spent time in God’s Word every day? Have you regularly reflected on how God’s Word should inform your life circumstances? If so, share a blessing of this with a friend. If not, ask a godly friend to help you develop a better path forward.

3. What are the most difficult aspects of your life right now? Are you facing them in a manner consistent with God’s Word? Are you seeking God’s will in the circumstances?
