Central Truth

The godly wisdom of Proverbs teaches us how to make a life of value, purpose, and satisfaction. Worldly wisdom alone may teach you how to make a living, but in the end, it leads you to vanity, emptiness, and despair.

Key Verse | Proverbs 13:14

The instruction of the wise is like a life-giving fountain;
those who accept it avoid the snares of death.
(Proverbs 13:14)

Proverbs 10–13

The Proverbs of Solomon

The proverbs of Solomon.

A wise son makes a glad father,
but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.
Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit,

A slack hand causes poverty,
but the hand of the diligent makes rich.
He who gathers in summer is a prudent son,
but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame.
Blessings are on the head of the righteous,
but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. 1 10:6 Or but violence covers the mouth of the wicked; also verse 11
The memory of the righteous is a blessing,
but the name of the wicked will rot.
The wise of heart will receive commandments,
but a babbling fool will come to ruin.
Whoever walks in integrity walks securely,
but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.

but the righteous is established forever.

Dive Deeper | Proverbs 10–13

I love the way proverbs pop in your mind! They’re short, pithy, and bite-sized. They’re easy to remember. They stick with you. Our English word proverb comes from two Latin words: pro, meaning “instead of,” and verb, meaning “many words.” The book of Proverbs isn’t in a logical sequence that tells a story. It’s more like a kaleidoscope with surprising patterns at every turn. The Spirit of God uses it to teach us many things as He chooses.

The book of Proverbs is all about wisdom, being skillful and successful in your relationships and responsibilities by following God’s principles of order in the universe He created. It’s common sense and more. Foolish people don’t believe or trust Him.

The first nine chapters compare wisdom and foolishness. Chapters 10-15 have a series of contrasts between the life of wisdom and the life of foolishness—belief and unbelief, obedience and disobedience. In the literary technique of Hebrew parallelism, the verses often have two thoughts matched up. Sometimes they contrast; sometimes they continue a thought and build on each other. This makes the Proverbs sharper and more memorable.

As a new believer, I knew I lacked godly wisdom. Before I ever knew what a quiet time was, my pastor suggested I start reading Proverbs—one chapter a day. On the first day of the month, I read the first chapter. On the 15th, I read the 15th chapter. I read all 31 chapters every month. I did this for five years. I got a lot out of it, and God got a lot more of me. I started my days on the right foot. It got my life on the right path. I recommend this to you.

If you have been looking for life in your education or at the movies or the mall or in any person but the Lord Jesus Christ, you’re looking in the wrong places. Colossians 2:3 talks of Jesus: “In Him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” All the qualities of wisdom found in Proverbs are seen in the Lord Jesus Christ. Trust Him. Follow Him.
