Central Truth

Take each day as one of great importance.  Don't let the days, weeks, months & years slip by only to realize that you have done nothing significant.  Let us use our short time on earth to glorify our God.

Key Verse | Psalm 90:12

So teach us to number our days, that we may present to You a heart of wisdom. (Psalm 90:12)

Psalm 90 (Book 4)

Book Four

From Everlasting to Everlasting

A Prayer of Moses, the man of God.

Lord, you have been our dwelling place 1 90:1 Some Hebrew manuscripts (compare Septuagint) our refuge
    in all generations.
Before the mountains were brought forth,
    or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
    from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

You return man to dust
    and say, “Return, O children of man!” 2 90:3 Or of Adam
For a thousand years in your sight
    are but as yesterday when it is past,
    or as a watch in the night.

You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream,
    like grass that is renewed in the morning:
in the morning it flourishes and is renewed;
    in the evening it fades and withers.

For we are brought to an end by your anger;
    by your wrath we are dismayed.
You have set our iniquities before you,
    our secret sins in the light of your presence.

For all our days pass away under your wrath;
    we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
10  The years of our life are seventy,
    or even by reason of strength eighty;
yet their span 3 90:10 Or pride is but toil and trouble;
    they are soon gone, and we fly away.
11  Who considers the power of your anger,
    and your wrath according to the fear of you?

12  So teach us to number our days
    that we may get a heart of wisdom.
13  Return, O LORD! How long?
    Have pity on your servants!
14  Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love,
    that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
15  Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
    and for as many years as we have seen evil.
16  Let your work be shown to your servants,
    and your glorious power to their children.
17  Let the favor 4 90:17 Or beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
    and establish the work of our hands upon us;
    yes, establish the work of our hands!

Dive Deeper | Psalm 90 (Book 4)

We recently had a garage sale at our house.  Wow!  What a great feeling!  Purging our home of unwanted/unnecessary junk... there's nothing better.  Of course, in order to have a garage sale, you have to clean out all of the nooks and crannies that you would rather leave alone.  As I was going through a box of old books I came across several journals from my years in high school, college, and after.  There was a common theme among the majority of journals that I found... they were about 1/4 full!  They all started the same with several pages of my everyday thoughts on life and slowly began to dwindle to every other day, once a week, once every 2 months... nothing.

You see, I have a problem with follow-through.  I can think of grand goals for my life.  They sound so wonderful when I tell others.  "I am going to do this bible study, workout 7 days a week, memorize this book of the Bible and write 20 letters to old friends this month."  These goals are not bad, however, when I am not prayerful in how the LORD would have me spend my days, my time seems to slip away.  NONE of my goals are completed.

In this psalm, Moses talks constantly about time.  He reminds us that the Lord has been there since the beginning and will continue to be there when man returns to dust.  Our lives are fleeting, but they can mean something if only we ask our Creator what He wants from us.  You see, only He can see our lives from a bigger perspective.  Just as Moses prayed in Psalm 90:12, my prayer is "God, teach me to make each day worth something."  Those words remind me to not set several selfish goals, but to have one life goal:  meditate daily on God's Word.  I must daily fall at His feet and ask that He reveal His heart to me.  Only then, will my life daily be one that is in line with the perfect plan of my Creator.    Its all about the follow-through.

Discussion Questions

1.  Are there specific areas in my life where I have failed to follow-through?  What caused me to lose momentum?

2.  How can the Lord use me in significant ways today?

3.  Am I daily asking God to reveal His plan for my life?  Am I daily in His Word?

4.  What hinders me from making each day count for Christ?
