Central Truth
Just who is God? He is robed in majesty and armed in strength. His throne was established long ago, He is eternal, He is mighty, His truths stand firm, and He is holy! We should find rest and peace in who He is! He reigns!
The Lord reigns!
He is robed in majesty,
the Lord is robed,
he wears strength around his waist.
Indeed, the world is established, it cannot be moved.
(Psalm 93:1)
1
The LORD reigns; he is robed in majesty;
the LORD is robed; he has put on strength as his belt.
Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.
2
Your throne is established from of old;
you are from everlasting.
3
The floods have lifted up, O LORD,
the floods have lifted up their voice;
the floods lift up their roaring.
4
Mightier than the thunders of many waters,
mightier than the waves of the sea,
the LORD on high is mighty!
5
Your decrees are very trustworthy;
holiness befits your house,
O LORD, forevermore.
Psalm 93 comforts me because it paints a vivid picture of just who God is. He reigns and is robed in majesty. He is mighty, eternal, and holy. His laws stand firm, as does His creation. Earth is anchored and immovable; it's Christ's footstool.
Does my life reflect confidence in these truths? If God reigns, does it really matter who sits in the oval office? How important is it which volleyball team my daughter makes? If God is eternal, am I keeping an eternal perspective on daily issues? Life and death are speed bumps on the road to eternal life with God! As Todd Wagner, our pastor, encouraged us recently: Focus on the eternal and squeeze in the temporal.
Can I truly grasp how mighty my God is? Last August in Destin, Florida, we headed down to the beach on a beautiful sunny day only to learn that the water was off limits. It was a double-red-flag day, which was an indication of how powerful and mighty the waves were right then. My mom, my children, and I decided to stroll down the beach allowing the water to barely brush up on our feet. But the beach patrol alerted us that even walking along the edge of the water could result in a hefty fine. Those native Floridians had a great respect for the mightiness of the ocean. Do I have a similar respect for the mightiness of God? Remember, He reigns over everything in my life, even the double-red-flag days.
Last Sunday, we sang a song that proclaims just that, "He Reigns" by the Newsboys. I have listened to it all week, being reminded how empowering it is to know that my God reigns! The chorus says, "A love song born of a grateful choir . . . It's all God's children singing, 'Glory, Glory, Hallelujah!' He reigns! He reigns!" And so be it!
1. Does your life reflect confidence in the truths expressed in Psalm 93?
2. Are you keeping an eternal perspective in your daily life?
3. Do you truly grasp the mightiness of God?
4. Can you sing "He reigns" with conviction in your heart?
5. Are you looking to God with confidence on those double-red-flag days?
