Central Truth
God requires authenticity in our actions and speech. When we choose lies and deceit, He will expose us to the reality of life without Him.
"Behold, I am against you," declares the LORD of hosts;
"And I will lift up your skirts over your face,
And show to the nations your nakedness
And to the kingdoms your disgrace."
(Nahum 3:5)
1
Woe to the bloody city,
all full of lies and plunder—
no end to the prey!
2
The crack of the whip, and rumble of the wheel,
galloping horse and bounding chariot!
3
Horsemen charging,
flashing sword and glittering spear,
hosts of slain,
heaps of corpses,
dead bodies without end—
they stumble over the bodies!
4
And all for the countless whorings of the prostitute,
graceful and of deadly charms,
who betrays nations with her whorings,
and peoples with her charms.
5
Behold, I am against you,
declares the LORD of hosts,
and will lift up your skirts over your face;
and I will make nations look at your nakedness
and kingdoms at your shame.
6
I will throw filth at you
and treat you with contempt
and make you a spectacle.
7
And all who look at you will shrink from you and say,
“Wasted is Nineveh; who will grieve for her?”
Where shall I seek comforters for you?
8
Are you better than Thebes

Yet she became an exile;
she went into captivity;
her infants were dashed in pieces
at the head of every street;
for her honored men lots were cast,
and all her great men were bound in chains.

You also will be drunken;
you will go into hiding;
you will seek a refuge from the enemy.
12
All your fortresses are like fig trees
with first-ripe figs—
if shaken they fall

Behold, your troops
are women in your midst.
The gates of your land
are wide open to your enemies;
fire has devoured your bars.

Draw water for the siege;
strengthen your forts;
go into the clay;
tread the mortar;
take hold of the brick mold!

There will the fire devour you;
the sword will cut you off.
It will devour you like the locust.
Multiply yourselves like the locust;
multiply like the grasshopper!

You increased your merchants
more than the stars of the heavens.
The locust spreads its wings and flies away.

Your shepherds are asleep,
O king of Assyria;
your nobles slumber.
Your people are scattered on the mountains
with none to gather them.

There is no easing your hurt;
your wound is grievous.
All who hear the news about you
clap their hands over you.
For upon whom has not come
your unceasing evil?
Doing something mischievous, lying, choosing a path even when you know it's not the way God wants you to go – these are the kind of things we all do. Well, I know I sure do. I always seem to go down the path that I know is wrong, just for the thrill of doing it. And when I get on that path, there is no thrill. There is nothing, just me wondering, "Why? Why did I start walking on this road?" The Apostle Paul has been there, "For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate." (Romans 7:15) This behavior seems to be a constant theme in my life.
Recently, I was walking down a path God really did not want for me. Like He did to the people of Nineveh, He exposed me out in the open, though not on the scale He did for Assyria. He did not destroy me, but I was embarrassed.
One of my close friends, who is not a believer, called me out for some bad choices I had made the week before. Normally, I would have blown it off by making a joke, but this time God orchestrated his wife to be sitting at the table. My friend called me out in front of his wife. My bad decisions were exposed. In an instant, I was humiliated. "And I will lift up your skirts over your face, And show to the nations your nakedness And to the kingdoms your disgrace." (Nahum 3:5)
I chose a life of lies (Leviticus 19:11), and God used an unlikely method to knock the breath out of me and show me the error of my decisions. Even though He used embarrassment to take me down a peg or two, I am thankful that His love for me is so great He used tough love to get me back on the path He desires for me (Jeremiah 29:11).
1. What is one way in which God has exposed you in the past?
2. How did you take it? Were you angry with God? Or, did you know it was out of love that He wanted you on the right path?
3. What is one lifestyle change you could make to help ensure God would not have to use some tough love?
4. Why do think the people of Nineveh turned away from honoring God and from following His commands?
WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY
MICAH 7-HABAKKUK 1 (NOVEMBER 7-11)
Read Micah 7:18-20.
What does verse 18 tell us that God will do for Israel, both concerning their sins and what He shows them? What does it mean to be pardoned from something? How is this showing mercy? (Mercy is defined as not getting what we deserve.) What does verse 19 say God will do to their sins?
Read Psalm 103:11-12.
Just as He removes Israel's sins and throws them into the depths of the ocean (Micah 7:19), what does He do to our sins in Psalm 103:12? When God shows His faithfulness to His people, both the Israelites and us, to whom was the promise originally made that He is fulfilling? (Micah 7:20)
Read Genesis 12:1-3, 22:17-18, and Genesis 28:13-15 to see the actual promises made to Abraham and Jacob.
ACTIVITY: Go online and look up how deep the ocean is. If it is in km, convert it into miles (miles = # of km/1.61). Using that number of miles, look up different distances between major cities. Check out those distances on a map. How does it make you feel that God removes your sins so far from you? Take time to pray and thank Him for His mercy!
