Central Truth

Obedience to God leads to the true definition of fulfillment, blessing, and peace.

Key Verse | Psalm 128:1

How blessed is every one of the Lord’s loyal followers,
each one who keeps his commands!
(Psalm 128:1)

Psalm 128

Blessed Is Everyone Who Fears the LORD

A Song of Ascents.

Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD,
    who walks in his ways!
You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands;
    you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.

Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
    within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots
    around your table.
Behold, thus shall the man be blessed
    who fears the LORD.

The LORD bless you from Zion!
    May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem
    all the days of your life!
May you see your children's children!
    Peace be upon Israel!

Dive Deeper | Psalm 128

Psalm 128 is an uplifting piece of Scripture that fits the holidays nicely. I absolutely love the holidays!
Like many of you fellow Journey readers, Elizabeth and I enjoy being festive. We like having a real Christmas tree, placing elaborate lights out front, and filling our home with holiday scents. I have been called Clark Griswold more than once in my life!
If someone were to use festiveness as a "barometer" to measure my fulfillment cup in life, that cup would appear pretty full. However, I am blessed to know that festiveness is not the correct measuring stick for fulfillment. Sadly, I have known people with beautiful homes, folks with lots of toys, and individuals whose festiveness appears off the charts, but their fulfillment would look like an empty cup when you examine their lives.
One of the keys to my profession is choosing the right barometer or metric to determine financial value. Fortunately, we don’t have to guess which metric in life leads to true value and fulfillment. God only asks us to know one. That comes solely through a relationship with His Son—Jesus Christ.
Psalm 128 is loaded with promises to those who obey God’s commandments and live in light of His love. God reminds us that His promises come first in the form of security in a relationship with Him (verses 2, 5), and second, in reaping godly relationships with others (verses 3-4, 6). I am thankful that He reminds us how true blessing comes from Him. That's worth celebrating these holidays!

Discussion Questions

1. What metric or "barometer" do you use to assess fulfillment?

2. What does God say about where true blessing comes from?

3. How will you respond to that this holiday season?
