Central Truth

People watch our daily actions to find a way to accuse us. Therefore, we have to get rid of the burdens and sin that consume us and to live out our faith.

Key Verse | Mark 3:2

They were watching Him to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him.  (Mark 3:2)

Mark 3:1-19

A Man with a Withered Hand

Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. And they watched Jesus, 1 3:2 Greek him to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him. And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here.” And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.

A Great Crowd Follows Jesus

Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great crowd followed, from Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon. When the great crowd heard all that he was doing, they came to him. And he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they crush him, 10 for he had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed around him to touch him. 11 And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” 12 And he strictly ordered them not to make him known.

The Twelve Apostles

13 And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. 14 And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach 15 and have authority to cast out demons. 16 He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); 17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); 18 Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot, 2 3:18 Greek kananaios, meaning zealot 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Dive Deeper | Mark 3:1-19

We are followers of Christ, and we are being watched. Do you live out the fact that you are a servant of God and love the Lord? Just stop and think. We are called to live out our faith 24/7! Not just when the cute boy, the popular girls, or your parents are looking. No, we are called to live out our faith ALL THE TIME.

The Pharisees were watching Jesus closely to find a reason to accuse Him (Mark 3:2). Even though they had no true reason to accuse Him, they did. This is our reality, too. People are always waiting for the chance to say, “Well, that Hannah girl is a Christian, but she didn’t sit with the new girl, so why should I?” In Hebrews 12:1-2, the Word tells us that we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses so we must throw off the sin that entangles and focus our eyes on Christ.

My family and I are HUGE Texas Longhorn fans. I have heard a great story about Colt McCoy that illustrates this truth. A few years back, UT suffered a  heartbreaking loss at Kansas State. The morning after the game, Brad McCoy, Colt’s father, received a phone call from a member of the church Colt attended. On Saturday Colt had been bashed for his “not-so-great” play on the football field, and he had not gotten home from that away game until 4:00 a.m. on Sunday. But, on that same Sunday morning, Colt was at the 9:00 a.m. church service worshiping the Lord. The church member thanked Mr. McCoy for the huge impact Colt had made on his ten-year-old son. It goes to show that no matter how frustrated, disappointed, confused, or doubtful you are, serving the Lord counts. As in this story, even your presence can reveal how much your relationship with the Lord matters. Colt was able to influence the little boy just by demonstrating his priorities.

So remember, you are being watched. I encourage you to continue to live out your faith even when the persecution or hardships come.
