Central Truth

In our time of need, we should go to God first.

Key Verse | Mark 4:40

And he said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40)

Mark 4:35-41

Jesus Calms a Storm

35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Dive Deeper | Mark 4:35-41

Have you ever been anxious? I often struggle with anxiety. I worry about silly things that will probably never happen. Have you ever worried or been so concerned about something that eventually ended up working out just fine? This sometimes happens to me. This also happened to the disciples in our passage today.

In this specific part of Mark, Jesus and the disciples are in a boat, and a storm is rising. While the disciples on the boat are anxious and worried about drowning, Jesus is asleep. That paints an amazing picture in my mind about how we do not always trust God first. We cannot see the big picture that God, the Creator of the universe, is in control. It's really surprising to me that the disciples could doubt Jesus even though they were living with Him each and every day. I can relate to how they felt. Even though I know God is in control, I sometimes still get anxious and lean on "my own understanding" even though Proverbs 3:5 counsels against that.
One of the main points of today’s passage in Mark is that God is there for us to lean on whenever we need Him. We often try to lean on our friends, our money, or other things in our lives. Somehow no matter what it is, many of us tend to go to those things before we go to God. My mom and dad often encourage me to pray when I get anxious. I try to focus on Philippians 4:6, which says: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” When we face storms like the disciples, we should reach out to God since He is right there in the boat with us.

2. When you get in the Word, does it help calm down your anxious heart?

FAMILY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

2. Do you have anything happening in your life that makes you wonder if Jesus cares?

3. Can you believe Jesus cares even though your circumstances are not easy?
