Central Truth
If we are going to be people used by God to make a radical impact in this world as “fishers of men,” we must start responding daily “at God’s word” and ignoring the cry of a broken world selling us a cheap knock-off.
And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." (Luke 5:5, ESV)
1 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 1 5:10 The Greek word anthropoi refers here to both men and women 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
Have you ever had one of those moments when someone asks you do something that seems crazy and then says "trust me." One of those moments for me was standing on the edge of a cliff as my husband was teaching me to rappel for the first time. As he "lovingly" pushed me to the edge and encouraged me to step off (with all the appropriate gear, of course), I simply had to say, "I am trusting your word that this gear will hold me." Sure enough it did, and I have gone rappelling many more times since that day.
It is amazing how we put our complete trust in people and circumstances that by nature will fail us. Too often, we act like we trust God, but the way we live proves differently.
As the story in Luke 5 unfolds, Peter realizes there is something profoundly different about Jesus. He realizes that this is a man worth listening to even when Peter's own fishing experience indicates that Jesus' words do not make sense. Jesus, a carpenter, tells Peter, a fisherman, where and how to fish. Peter realizes that Jesus’ words are worth following, even though Peter's experience tells him otherwise. Peter answers Jesus' instruction: "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." (Luke 5:5, ESV) Peter’s life is radically changed from that moment on because he choose to listen to the right voice and obeyed “at His word.”
Whose word are you listening to?
1. What lies from the world or from those around you are listening to more than the promises and truths from Christ?
2. Are there places in Scripture where you struggle to take God at His Word? Why?
3. What words in Scripture do you need to be listening to?
4. Are you allowing community to help you follow God's Word? If so, how can you take it to next level of going deeper? If not, who could you begin to let encourage you with God's Word?
FAMILY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Have you ever been asked to do something that you had already tried and it hadn’t worked?
2. What did Jesus tell Simon to do in verse 4? How much had Simon and his partners caught as they fished all night? How did he respond to what Jesus told him to do? It takes faith to trust Jesus and do what He asks us to do in His Word.
3. Is there anything God is asking you to do that will take faith to obey Him? How can you make your faith in Jesus' words stronger?
