Central Truth
Be amazed at our Creator, and give Him the glory due His name!
[T]he twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
"Worthy are you, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they existed and were created."
(Revelation 4:10-11)
1 After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” 2 At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. 3 And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald. 4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings 1 4:5 Or voices, or sounds and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God, 6 and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal.
And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind: 7 the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight. 8 And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say,
“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty,
who was and is and is to come!”
9 And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
11
“Worthy are you, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they existed and were created.”
Picture it. It is glorious. Hear the sounds. It is never quiet.
Jasper and carnelian (deep red minerals), a rainbow resembling an emerald, a sea of glass that is clear as crystal, four living creatures constantly singing praises to the Lord, and 24 elders surrounding God's throne from which thunder and lightning burst forth.
The four creatures full of eyes caught my attention. They never stop saying, ''Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!'' (verse 8) No matter where these creatures look, they can't help but see God's creation and majesty, which means they can't help but praise Him for who He is.
As those creatures sing, the elders take off their crowns to give God glory, honor, and thanks. They praise God because He alone is worthy to receive such things, and He is the Creator of all things. The elders are not entitled, self-righteous, or self-glorifying. They know that spending all their time in eternity that praising God is the worthiest thing they can do!
When I think of time I've spent worshipping with other believers around the world, I can't help but think of what heaven must sound like. So many languages, but one loving Lord that bonds us all together. Everyone praising the same God -- the Creator of all. Everyone proclaiming His glory, sovereignty, honor, and power. Forever.
Some of my dearest memories are singing with my Ethiopian brothers and sisters. My favorite song is "Galatomi," which is about how we thank the Lord though we don't yet have enough words to fully express it. The Ethiopians taught our teams the words of this song, and it was amazing to worship with them and be reminded that our God is the same no matter where we are.
Use the language you have to praise the Lord -- don't wait for eternity! Praise Him now and get a sneak peek at how sweet it will be when eternity begins! Look around and see the Lord's majesty and creation. Praise the Creator!
1. What do you learn about God's existence and glory in this passage?
2. If people were writing down what you said/sang as you praised God, what would they write?
3. What "crowns" in your life do you need to lay down in order to give God the glory due His name?
4. Jesus tells us we can know we are going to spend eternity with Him when we believe in the One who sent Him -- God (see John 5:24). Have you accepted that free gift of grace so you can join the angels' singing and praising for eternity? If not, what is holding you back?
