Central Truth
The enemy is more powerful and the stakes are higher than you can imagine.
"He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me, scatters." (Luke 11:23)
14 Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. 15 But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,” 16 while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven. 17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. 18 And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. 19 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe; 22 but when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil. 23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
24 When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first.”
27 As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” 28 But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
One of the low points in my life was losing the state championship football game my senior year in high school. We were playing at Owen Field in Norman, which seemed huge (you could fit the population of my entire hometown in the seats about eight times over). We lost that day because we played against a superior opponent. Despite our best efforts, we lacked the physical ability to stop the other team, which was bigger and faster than we were.
As a 17-year-old kid, the idea of winning state was a very big deal. As a 32-year-old father, husband, and Christ-follower, I have a better perspective on what really matters. As a believer, nothing matters more than fully participating in God's plan for my life. Luke 11:23 makes it clear that there are no neutral believers; we either gather or scatter.
The problem is that, just like in the football game, we have a "strong man" as our enemy (Luke 11:21). Peter describes him as “a roaring lion” who is on the prowl looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). Our opponent is both a lion and a sweet seductress who knows us better than we know ourselves. He wants to defeat us at all costs. We cannot rely on our own abilities against such an enemy. We cannot achieve "peace for our time" by appeasing Satan the way Chamberlain attempted with Hitler. Satan will destroy us if we try to make peace with him. That is why Christ says that we must take a stand for Him. We must hold firm through the power of the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 1:13-14).
Thankfully, I never had to watch the game film from our state championship game. We all, however, will watch the game film of our lives in front of our Creator and Savior (Romans 14:12; 2 Corinthians 5:9-10). The victory is ours through the power of the Holy Spirit, but we must fully surrender to Him and place the pursuit of God's glory above the gratification of our flesh. Don't wait—the game clock is running!
1. What areas of your life will you dread to review "before the judgment seat of Christ"? (2 Corinthians 5:9-10) What changes are you making in those areas?
2. "Christ came to gather people into allegiance with himself for the glory of God." (Piper, What Jesus Demands from the World, p. 69) How does your life reflect that you are "gathering" with Christ?
FAMILY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Jesus tells the crowd in verse 28, “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” Discuss with your family how much of the Word of God you each have heard over the past week.
2. Next, have each person give as many examples as they can of how they have obeyed the Word of God over the past week. Are there any commands you have heard, but not obeyed?
3. Discuss why the following equation is true: Hearing + Obedience = Blessing.
