Central Truth
We are only made complete through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The world will leave us empty and wanting more.
And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach. (Colossians 1:21-22)
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,
2 To the saints and faithful brothers 1 1:2 Or brothers and sisters. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, the plural Greek word adelphoi (translated brothers) may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters in Christ at Colossae:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father.
3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, 6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, 7 just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. 2 1:7 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word sundoulos, see Preface He is a faithful minister of Christ on your 3 1:7 Some manuscripts our behalf 8 and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.
9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; 12 giving thanks 4 1:12 Or patience, with joy giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you 5 1:12 Some manuscripts us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by 6 1:16 That is, by means of; or in him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation 7 1:23 Or to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.
24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, 25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, 26 the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. 27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.
So many girls' hearts swooned when Tom Cruise uttered these words to Renee Zellweger in Jerry Maguire, "You complete me." While it sounds like an incredibly romantic thing to say, it couldn't be further from the truth.
In reality, we are only made complete in Christ. Only in Him do we find hope -- our true fulfillment. Yet, we look for completeness in so many other places.
While in college, I began to believe the lie that a Christian couldn't have fun and that I would be missing out if I chose to follow Christ. I bought the world's definition for life: drinking, partying, inappropriate relationships, etc. I thought it was cool. I couldn't have been further from the truth. That life was exhausting.
I was trying to be someone I wasn't. I felt like I couldn't keep pace with what the world said I should do. Attempting it anyway, I felt empty. Only then did I realize that the completeness I longed for could only be found in a relationship with Christ.
In Christ, I have everything I need. Philippians 4:19 reads, "And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus." Isn't that amazing? There is nothing on earth that will satisfy or complete us apart from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
I love how Colossians 1:21-22 presents such a beautiful picture that we are made holy, blameless, and beyond reproach before God through the blood that was shed by Jesus Christ on the cross. It's not about doing this or doing that. It's about receiving the wonderful gift of God's grace through Jesus Christ that makes us complete.
While at times I still struggle with finding satisfaction through the world, I know it always leaves me empty. Thank you, Lord, for pursuing a sinner like me and pointing me to the only relationship that can complete me.
1. Do you find yourself looking for satisfaction in things the world has to offer? Or through a relationship with Christ? Do you feel empty? Want more?
2. What pulls your heart towards false completeness or satisfaction?
3. How can you guard your heart and mind from believing anything other than the truth that Jesus Christ can truly satisfy? (See Hebrews 12:1-2, Matthew 6:33, Romans 12:2)
4. Have you received God's free gift of grace to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ? If not, find a believer in Christ and ask what this looks like and how you enter into a relationship with Christ. I promise you will never be the same!
WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY
August 13-17 (Philippians 1 - Colossians 1)
Read Philippians 2: 1-11.
• What does it mean to be selfish or to try to impress others?
• Why would those things go against what God would have you do?
• What, instead, does Paul say we should do? (verse 3 & 4)
• What would it look like in your own life to do those things?
• What did Christ do for you?
• How did He show humility?
•
Is it easy for you to be humble, not seek everyone's approval, and to serve others above yourself?
Activity: At a family meeting, ask each person to identify someone to serve. For the person you identify, think about doing something that puts that person before yourself. Try to think of someone who cannot do anything for you in return!
