Central Truth

We will encounter circumstances that will cause us to doubt and have fear. As followers of Jesus Christ, we have graciously been given everything we need to overcome what God puts in our path. What God has given us is sufficient enough to handle anything we encounter.

Key Verse | 1 Peter 2:9–10

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. (1 Peter 2:9-10)

1 Peter 2

A Living Stone and a Holy People

So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
    a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,” 1 2:7 Greek the head of the corner

and

“A stone of stumbling,
    and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.

Submission to Authority

13 Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, 2 2:13 Or every institution ordained for people whether it be to the emperor 3 2:13 Or king; also verse 17 as supreme, 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants 4 2:16 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface of God. 17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.

18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. 19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Dive Deeper | 1 Peter 2

I have asked myself a number of questions over the last couple years. When I married my wife, I asked myself, "Do I know how to love my wife the way Christ has called me to?" and "Can I lead her in a way that she would want to follow me?" When my wife told me she was pregnant with our daughter, I asked myself, "Am I prepared to be a parent?" The question I asked myself when I started my job was, "Do I really have the talents and abilities necessary to be successful at this?"

I realized that the questions I was asking were spawned from fear, doubt, and worry. 1 Peter 2:9-10 is an amazing truth that helped me find the answers to the questions I was asking. Peter describes who we are as followers of Jesus Christ. He tells us that we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, that we are God's own possession. He goes on to say that before we accepted Christ we were not a people and had not received mercy, but now we are the people of God and have received mercy.

This truth was the answer to my questions: YES! ABSOLUTELY!

We are God's chosen people, and we have the ability to accomplish all things He puts in our path. It does not matter what that might be, whether it's as a spouse, parent, employee, or student, or if we encounter a trial or an opportunity. When we became followers of Jesus Christ, we were given all that we would ever need to accomplish the things that God has called us to.

We do not need to worry about failing in any situation. A great quote from Paul Tripp articulates this much better than I can: "If God is in control of every aspect of your world and his grace covers all of your sin, why would you ever give way to fear?"

God is in control of every aspect of our life, trust in Him and do not give way to fear!

Discussion Questions

1. What areas of your life cause you to fear?

2. What is it about those areas of your life that causes you to fear?

3. How has God carried you through past fearful situations?

4. If you knew that you could not fail, what is something you would do?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

October 15-19 (James 3-1 Peter 2)

Read James 3:1-12.

• What different things does James compare to our tongues?
• Does James mean that your literal tongue is bad or good? What is he actually talking about?
• How have you seen words be used for good? How have you seen them be used for bad?
• Is it hard for you to control your words?
• Do you take time to think about what you say before you say it?

Activity: Get a full tube of toothpaste. Discuss how the toothpaste in the tube is like words that are in your head. Next, squeeze all the toothpaste out of the tube. Then, let your kids try to put the toothpaste back in the tube. It's impossible. Talk with your family about how this is like our words and that, once they are out our mouths, we cannot take them back.

Ask: Why is it important to think about what we say before we say it? How can you use your words for good and not harm? Discuss ways that you can be more careful this week about the words that come out of your mouth.
