Central Truth
Jesus is coming back -- you can be sure of it!
[A]nd they said to the mountains and to the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?" (Revelation 6:16-17)
1 Now I watched when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder, “Come!” 2 And I looked, and behold, a white horse! And its rider had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer.
3 When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” 4 And out came another horse, bright red. Its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth, so that people should slay one another, and he was given a great sword.
5 When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand. 6 And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures, saying, “A quart 1 6:6 Greek choinix, a dry measure equal to about a quart of wheat for a denarius, 2 6:6 A denarius was a day's wage for a laborer and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and wine!”
7 When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” 8 And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! And its rider's name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth.
9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. 10 They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” 11 Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers 3 6:11 Or brothers and sisters. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, the plural Greek word adelphoi (translated brothers) may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been.
12 When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, 13 and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. 14 The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. 15 Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave 4 6:15 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, 16 calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, 17 for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?”
Being asked to write on Revelation 6 was intimidating to me beyond all belief. I am most comfortable in a room full of my people (5 and 6 year olds). They are absolutely my area of expertise. I love taking BIG biblical truths and breaking them down into bite-size pieces for all the kiddos. So upon assignment, I desperately dove in to try to understand everything about these six seals.
It is absolutely fascinating to uncover all the meaning in these 17 verses. This is the first of three seven-part judgments. The order of events predicted here is very similar to the Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24). All of these events (the appearance of the Antichrist, war, famine, death, martyrdom) sound terrible. But in verse 16, we see that none of these difficulties compare to God's judgment. Unbelievers cry out, "Fall on us and hide us." They are literally requesting mountains and rocks to crash down over them and cover them. Being face to face with God after having denied Him is much more tragic than anything imaginable.
I can't seem to escape my kindergarten teacher roots, and I continue to come back to one main point; we know for sure that Jesus is coming back!
So what? Well, there are two things to ponder:
1. Will you be terrified because you have denied Him? Or will you be overwhelmed with complete peace because your Savior returns? Rather than being terrified of Jesus' return, we should be waiting confidently. Which leads me to my next point to ponder . . .
2. What are you doing in preparation?
Each day that Christ gives us and that He patiently waits to return is another day we have to tell others about Him. It is another day to get more sheep into the fold. God has a perfect plan and perfect timing. We need to be thankful for our time and use it wisely. How are you using your time?
1. Read the Olivet Discourse in Matthew 24. What similarities can you find between these two passages?
2. Why do you think Jesus is waiting to return? What does the Bible tell us?
3. When is the last time you pursued someone on your Top Ten List?
4. Take some time to dive into Scripture and discover what else it says about Christ's return.
WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY
November 12-16 (Revelation 2-6)
Parents: Go to the following link (http://wmcc.jointhejourney.com/page_/3913). Print the chart titled "The Role of the Church." Read over it and make sure that you have a good grasp on it. Then create a blank chart to read through Revelation 2-3 with your kids and fill in the chart together. It might be fun to read the passages addressed to the different churches from two versions of the Bible to see the differences.
While you are reading, talk about the different ways the churches were affirmed and how those traits might look in our lives today. Then, talk about what they were not doing well and how those things might be seen in our lives today. In the end, talk about what the charges were to the churches and how we at Watermark are doing in living out the exhortation to follow God wholeheartedly. What could we be doing better?
Take time to pray for the leaders at Watermark, including your small group leaders. Pray, too, for the Church around the world to be strong in following Jesus and for our government to be men and women who fear the Lord.
