Central Truth

Whether we experience the "end times" or not, we need to be ready to be marked by what we believe.

Key Verse | Revelation 13:16–17

And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, and he provides that no one will be able to buy or sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast of the number of his name. (Rev 13:16-17)

Revelation 13

The First Beast

And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads. And the beast that I saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bear's, and its mouth was like a lion's mouth. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority. One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?”

And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling, 1 13:6 Or tabernacle that is, those who dwell in heaven. Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. 2 13:7 Some manuscripts omit this sentence And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. If anyone has an ear, let him hear:

10  If anyone is to be taken captive,
    to captivity he goes;
if anyone is to be slain with the sword,
with the sword must he be slain.

Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints.

The Second Beast

11 Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence, 3 13:12 Or on its behalf and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed. 13 It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, 14 and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of 4 13:14 Or on behalf of the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain. 16 Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, 5 13:16 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, 17 so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. 18 This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666. 6 13:18 Some manuscripts 616

Dive Deeper | Revelation 13

When first reading this chapter, I found myself in a horror film: a dragon standing on the seashore, a beast coming out of the water, another beast rising out of the earth (verses 1 & 11). Never mind the chapter ending with foreshadowing of humanity being "marked" with 666.

The truth is the Book of Revelation has always overwhelmed me. All these strange animals, scrolls, numbers, and symbolism. Don't get me wrong, I found it interesting to do some research and better understand this chapter, but with each turn of the page things seems to get darker and darker.

The dragon represents Satan, who is the one to give authority to the other two beasts. The beast from the sea is thought to represent the embodiment of civil and military power in the Antichrist, while the last beast comes from the earth (verse 11) and is also called the "False Prophet," who embodies religious and media power. Together, all three make up an unholy trinity.

But what struck me most were those final verses (verses 16-17). Just as Christ has marked His people (see Revelation 7:3, 9:4), Satan plans to mark the rest of humanity. On earth, all types of people will bear Satan's mark that allows them "to buy or to sell," or basically to function on this earth. But those with the Lord's mark will be faced with severe persecution and struggle to survive in the end times. It won't be the first time Christians have faced persecution, but it is a reminder of the choice I personally made to be marked by Christ, my Savior. Can others see His mark on my life as prominently as Satan plans to mark humanity (verse 16 -- "on their right hand or on their forehead")? Or better yet, will I remain steadfast despite the struggles and hardships that inevitably come to those marked as Christ's?

I know the end of the story. Christ has already died for me, and in the end He wins. There is light in the midst of this darkness. But am I willing to stand boldly with His mark on my life and die for Him if required?

Discussion Questions

1. Who owns you, this world or Christ?

2. Is the mark Christ has left on your life prominent to those around you, or are you ashamed of Christ's mark and try to hide it?

3. What kind of persecution or suffering would make you second guess your decision for Christ?

4. What kind of persecution and suffering did Christ experience in His decision to die for us?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

November 26-30 (Revelation 12-16)

Read Revelation 15:1-4.

• What two names does the writer give this little song in verse 3-4?
• Who was Moses? What did Moses do? (Hebrews 11:23-29, Exodus 3:10-12)
• Who is the Lamb? What did the Lamb do?
• Read Hebrews 3:1-6. What's the difference between Moses and the Lamb?
• What will the Lamb ultimately do one day?
• Why does it mean to be holy? Who is holy?
• Read Revelation 16:7. What does it mean that God's judgments are true and just?

Activity: Go to the following link (http://wmcc.jointhejourney.com/page_/3913) to listen to the song "Jehovah" and download the crossword puzzle. As you listen to the song fill in the meaning of the names listed in the clues of the crossword puzzle.

When done, talk about all the names of God and what they mean. This is the God whose judgments are just and true. How does it feel to be under a God who is loving, a healer, a provider, etc.?
