Central Truth
God's ways are not our ways. It seems to me that for a hard-hearted people who expect things to be done our way, He likes to show us His might through what we deem as impossible. Take, for instance, His repeated use of servant leadership as a means of salvation.
Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures:
"'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;
this was the Lord's doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes'?"
23 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24 Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
28 What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ 29 And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went. 30 And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him.
33 Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country. 34 When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants 1 21:34 Or bondservants; also verses 35, 36 to the tenants to get his fruit. 35 And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. 36 Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. 37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’ 39 And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” 41 They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”
42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
2
21:42
Greek the head of the corner
this was the Lord's doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?
43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. 44 And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.” 3 21:44 Some manuscripts omit verse 44
45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. 46 And although they were seeking to arrest him, they feared the crowds, because they held him to be a prophet.
A big problem I have is trusting God to take me through life's storms. I developed a bad habit of relying only on my own problem-solving skills instead of praying and letting Him provide the solution.
The Israelites seemed to have this same problem. Whenever they needed deliverance, they seemed to want to tell God how to provide it. For instance, in the Old Testament He was using judges to deliver Israel, but they wanted a king (1 Samuel 8:4-5). He wanted to use a shepherd against Goliath and the Philistines, but they wanted a great warrior (1 Samuel 17:1-11). And not only did David deliver them from the Philistines, he became their king.
In the second half of Matthew 21, the same questioning of God's solutions and methods are in play. The Jews were subject to Roman rule, so they were looking for a military champion. Jesus did not come in His first advent as a warrior king, so his credentials were consistently questioned by the religious leaders. When challenged about His authority to teach in the temple, He knew the religious leaders had already rejected John's revelation about Him being the Messiah, so He would not indulge their questioning of His authority. They had been crying out for a Savior, but now they were rejecting God’s provision.
By parables, Jesus let the religious leaders know that He was now rejecting them. He pointed to how God had entrusted the Jewish leaders with the care of His chosen people, but they had rejected Him. Instead of obeying God's Word, they tortured and/or killed His prophets and were going to kill His Son. Jesus closed by quoting a psalm Israel sang at Passover celebrating that the stone God provided but the builders rejected has become the cornerstone (Psalm 118:22-23). Their ancestors' rejection of David was a foreshadowing of their own rejection of Jesus.
God's ways are greater than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). While His answer to our prayers may not always make sense to us, He can be trusted. Our job is to pray and give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)!
1. What storm are you going through right now for which you feel you have to come up with a solution?
2. Before you started to formulate your own solutions, did you pray about it to ask for God's help?
3. If God doesn't answer your prayer request in the way you want or in the window of time you may be facing, can you still trust Him to take you through it? If trusting in God's provision is hard for you like it is for me, perhaps Proverbs 3:5-6 can be good memory verses.
