Central Truth

Our Savior is born! Just as the prophets said, Jesus came into this dark, broken world to be our light. He is our source of hope. Even during hard circumstances, we can rejoice! Let's tell others of the Savior who came into this world to save us from our sin!

Key Verse | Luke 2:10-12

And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger."

Luke 2:1-21

The Birth of Jesus Christ

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when 1 2:2 Or This was the registration before Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, 2 2:5 That is, one legally pledged to be married who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. 3 2:7 Or guest room

The Shepherds and the Angels

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

14  “Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” 4 2:14 Some manuscripts peace, good will among men

15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Dive Deeper | Luke 2:1-21

Christmas is known as a season of joy, lights, carols, family gatherings, and gifts. My family celebrates Christmas like no other. My grandfather had 17 siblings. So you can imagine the number of people at our family gatherings. We celebrate the Advent season with "Posadas," a tradition to commemorate the journey of Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem for the coming of Christ. We sing Christmas carols, read Scripture, pray, and share meals together.

Growing up, I would always get excited whenever lights were displayed across the city. I enjoyed seeing the lights at night. Their different colors can be appreciated more when it is dark.

Throughout the Old Testament, we see how the Israelites continuously rebelled against God and lived in darkness and separation from God. Despite their rebellion, God loved His people so much that He promised to send His Son to save them (Isaiah 9:6-7). How amazing to see God's promises fulfilled! Christmas is a season of joy because we celebrate the birth of the One who came "into the world as light" to save us and free us from our sin and darkness (John 12:46).

Christmas is a great opportunity to share the joy we find in Christ. Imagine being one of the shepherds who went to see Jesus! Luke 2:16-17 tells us that the shepherds living in the fields nearby hurried to see Jesus after an angel told them what had happened. They praised God and went off to spread the good news. If they went to tell others about Jesus, why wouldn't we do the same? Just like the shepherds, we are called to share the good news with others (Matthew 28:19-20). My prayer is that you will be encouraged to tell others about the gift of eternal life God provides through Christ (Romans 6:23).

Once Christmas is over and the lights are turned off and taken down, we can still have joy. Jesus has come so that we might be free and forgiven. Even through our seasons of darkness, Jesus is our light. Let's walk in this truth.

Discussion Questions

2. In Luke 2:17, the shepherds spread the good news that Jesus has come. Who will you be sharing the good news with this season?
