Central Truth

In the greatest of battles, we can only win by relying on the power of the finished work of Jesus' death and resurrection. This is how we fight and win our battles.

Key Verse | Revelation 12:11

And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.

Revelation 12

The Woman and the Dragon

And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth. And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it. She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule 1 12:5 Greek shepherd all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne, and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for 1,260 days.

Satan Thrown Down to Earth

Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers 2 12:10 Or brothers and sisters has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. 11 And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. 12 Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”

13 And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. 15 The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood. 16 But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth. 17 Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. Dive Deeper | Revelation 12

While I love Revelation, I can empathize with your possible apprehension and confusion. During my senior AP English class in high school, I had to report on one book from a list of 20 classical novels that had been banned at some time. As someone who enjoys a good challenge, I chose A Clockwork Orange. Regret and utter confusion kicked in quickly, and SparkNotes was no help. I still don't understand what madness went down in those nearly 200 pages. While this is no Clockwork Orange, I get it.

Remember that for those who are in Christ, there is much hope woven in each sign and illustration in Revelation. God is not a God of fear or confusion, but of peace and all wisdom. Ask and seek clarity.

Revelation 12 opens with an illustration of a woman (Israel) giving birth to her son (Jesus), while being pursued by a red dragon (Satan). The dragon ultimately fails in his attempt to devour the child. Before his pursuit even began, it was destined to end in failure because God's plan is perfect and always greater. God loves and protects His people.

After a series of losses ending with the dragon being hurled to earth by Michael and his angelic army, Satan, desperately seeking a "win," targets the believers that remain on earth.

In verse 11 we can learn a lot from how the believers chose to fight:

  1. They relied on the power in Jesus and the finished work of the cross;
  2. They embraced and professed the gospel and their testimony; and
  3. They believed that "to live is Christ, and to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21).

They were equipped and ready to fight the good fight. They weren't afraid of death, and they were conquerors. They knew how it would end. They relied on the power that raised Jesus from the grave and took away the sting of eternal death. That same power is at work today in all who proclaim Jesus as LORD. That same power will be accessible until the end.

Discussion Questions

1. Does Revelation instill hope or fear in you? If fear (in anything other than the LORD), ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to the hope and beauty that are in store for those who rely on His power. If hope, share that hope with others!

2. How do you fight your battles? Do you rely on God's strength or your own?

3. Do you believe that sharing your testimony is vital to your walk as a follower of Christ? Never forget that what Jesus has done in your life is powerful and real. Don't be afraid to share it!

4. Do you truly believe that God is able to do more than you can ask or imagine?

5. From 2 Corinthians 4:7-14 (NIV), what does it look like for you to "always carry around . . . the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in [your] body"?
