When I was given this section of Scripture to write a devotional on, I have to admit, it was hard to get through Psalm 25:2.
God kindly stopped me in my tracks to deeply consider the meaning here. Psalm 25:2 begins, "My God, I trust in you . . . ." I couldn't read on. For about two weeks, I pondered that verse as I spent time reading the Old Testament. I believed I could trust that God is real, He is good, and He sent His son Jesus as a perfect sacrifice. I trusted that He loved people, even me. However, I didn't trust that He was willing. My filter of God's character was off, and I saw it most in the way I prayed.
I would pray with caveats thinking I was being humble, when in reality I wasn't trusting in God's willingness, always giving Him an out if He wasn't willing to answer that specific prayer. I took the "even if" words of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel as they faced the fiery furnace and twisted the humility (Daniel 3:17-18). I thought the "even if" statement was in the tone of a puppy with its tail between its legs instead of a courageous Yahweh believer who has placed hope in eternity and not this earth.
As I confessed and repented from the way I had distorted God's character, I read on and observed the clarity of God to David. There is no way David could pray the way he does without trusting the WHOLE character of God. While we continue through Psalms and are reminded of the stories from which these prayers came, and as we prepare for the New Testament, will you consider how you might have forgotten or need to consider where you have a broken filter of who God is?
1. As you read the Psalms and reflect on what we have covered thus far in the Old Testament, consider where you have a broken filter of who God is.
2. Is there anything to learn from the way David prayed?
3. Are there any Psalms from today that you could share with others to encourage or comfort them?
