Big Idea
God reveals the way and His will through His Word.
Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said, "All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient."
1 Then he said to Moses, “Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and worship from afar. 2 Moses alone shall come near to the LORD, but the others shall not come near, and the people shall not come up with him.”
3 Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD and all the rules. 1 24:3 Or all the just decrees And all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words that the LORD has spoken we will do.” 4 And Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD. He rose early in the morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. 5 And he sent young men of the people of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to the LORD. 6 And Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of the blood he threw against the altar. 7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.” 8 And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words.”
9 Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up, 10 and they saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness. 11 And he did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank.
12 The LORD said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and wait there, that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.” 13 So Moses rose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. 14 And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we return to you. And behold, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever has a dispute, let him go to them.”
15 Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. 16 The glory of the LORD dwelt on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. 17 Now the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. 18 Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
The key verse (Exodus 24:7) tells us Israel heard what God had spoken through Moses, and they devoted themselves to being obedient to it. They raised their hands and said, "We will follow you, God!" They took a step of faith by sacrificing animals, confirming this dedication by throwing blood on the altar and on themselves. However, if you've read the Old Testament, you know Israel still doubted and doesn't stay faithful to this pledge very long.
What do you think of when you hear the word obedience? For some, this may evoke a fear of performing a set of tasks or rules. That's what comes immediately to my mind. Israel commits to obey . . . can they? Can I? As a new believer, I was overwhelmed by the idea of remaining obedient to all the "rules," especially when I failed to do that consistently.
It is true that when we make the decision to accept Christ, He calls us to deny ourselves and obey. In Matthew 16:24-25, Jesus tells us to take up our cross, losing our lives that we would follow Him. He also says in John 14:21 that we show our love for God by obeying His commandments.
The good news for Israel is that, in Genesis 15, God made a covenant with Abraham, promising to remain faithful even in their disobedience. In the same way, God remained faithful to Israel despite their sin, we experience the fulfillment of God's covenant in our lives through Christ.
When we find ourselves questioning our ability to abide, John 14:16-20 comforts us. We are not only covered in the blood of Jesus, but we are also sent an advocate (the Spirit) to aid us in our day-to-day lives. If you are overwhelmed today by the constant struggle to be obedient or to be perfect, rest in the truth that God sees you, He gave you a Helper, and He has made a way for you despite how you perform.
This month's memory verse
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
1. Have you made the decision to commit to a relationship with God?
2. The declaration made by Israel comes after they have seen God providentially and miraculously bring them out of Egypt and away from slavery. How has God revealed Himself to you in the past or present?
2. When are you hesitant to obey God personally? What might obedience look like for you in your workplace, home, and social circles today?
3. What is burdening you as you attempt to follow and abide with Jesus this week? Bring that to the Lord in prayer (Philippians 4:6-7) and to faithful community in your life (Galatians 6:2).
4. Exodus 24:17 describes how God appeared on top of the mountain as a glorious fire devouring the mountain. Tremble at the glory of God! What characteristic of God can you stand in awe of today?
