Big Idea
He is Risen!
So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.
9 So Moses made a bronze 1 21:9 Or copper serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 1 3:15 Some interpreters hold that the quotation ends at verse 15
16 For God so loved the world, 2 3:16 Or For this is how God loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
In Numbers 21:4-9, we find the Israelites in the wilderness, frustrated with a change of plans, discontent, and impatient. They complain to Moses and God about their circumstances and show no faith in God's ability to provide for their needs. God hears their complaints and sends venomous snakes resulting in death to those bitten. The Israelites cry out to God, and He responds by providing a way out for them—a path to life. Moses obeys God and makes a bronze serpent and sets it on a pole. If a serpent bites any of the Israelites, they can look at the bronze serpent and live. They are saved by an act of faith.
God loves His people. And God loves the people of the world. Not only does God provide a way for life for the Israelites in the wilderness, but He makes a way for the entire world to live—for eternity. John 3:14-15 tells us that Jesus was raised up on the cross to die for our sins so that all who believe in Him could have eternal life. Because of God's great love, He gave His one and only Son to save the world. In his commentary, D.A. Carson describes the act of God raising His Son on the cross as an act grounded in the love of God and a consequence of God's love. The gift of eternal life only requires an act of acceptance by faith (belief) to produce salvation. Ephesians 2:4-6 says, "But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus."
Knowing this truth, I can live each day with the hope of the eternal life that has been gifted to me. And because of God's love, I have the opportunity to confess, repent, and be reconciled with Him when I am impatient or discontent with my circumstances.
This month's memory verse
4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand;
1. The Israelites often questioned God's plan for them, and He continually proved Himself faithful. Do you ever find yourself impatient or discontent with your circumstances? Challenge: Confess this to others and reflect on ways God has shown Himself faithful in your life.
2. God sent His Son to die for the entire world. Are there people in your life who do not yet know this good news? How can you encourage them with the gospel this week?
3. 1 John 4:19 says that we love because He first loved us. How are you doing at loving others in your life? Is there someone with whom you need to reconcile? Someone you need to encourage?
As we gear up to release even more features for Join The Journey in 2025, our staff team, unfortunately, no longer has the margin to continue to support the comment functionality. We have big things in store for Join The Journey 2025. Stay tuned!
