Big Idea
God reveals the way and His will through His Word.
Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their generations, as a covenant forever.
1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, 4 to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, 5 in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft. 6 And behold, I have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. And I have given to all able men ability, that they may make all that I have commanded you: 7 the tent of meeting, and the ark of the testimony, and the mercy seat that is on it, and all the furnishings of the tent, 8 the table and its utensils, and the pure lampstand with all its utensils, and the altar of incense, 9 and the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the basin and its stand, 10 and the finely worked garments, 1 31:10 Or garments for worship the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons, for their service as priests, 11 and the anointing oil and the fragrant incense for the Holy Place. According to all that I have commanded you, they shall do.”
12 And the LORD said to Moses, 13 “You are to speak to the people of Israel and say, ‘Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the LORD, sanctify you. 14 You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. Whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 15 Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death. 16 Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their generations, as a covenant forever. 17 It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’”
18 And he gave to Moses, when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God.
Every Sunday, my wife and I open our home to anyone who would like to come for lunch. We invite neighbors, friends, family, and anyone we meet during the week. Those who come will linger around our table as we share a meal, pray, read Scripture, play games, and enjoy each other's company. We call it "Sabbath Celebration," and we have one rule: no screens. Our desire is for the time we share to be a time of rest from the busyness of daily life, from the distractions of entertainment, and from the isolation that rots the very bones of our society. We began this practice out of our own struggle toward rest and a calling to share with others the rest that Jesus has given us (Matthew 11:28).
God's purpose has always been to give His people rest. In the beginning, the Spirit of God moved to create the world (Genesis 1:2) as a place for God to dwell with man. At the completion of His creative activity, God rested, indicating that man was created for rest in the presence of God (Genesis 2:1-3). But sin kept mankind from entering that rest. The sin of Adam and Eve broke their fellowship with God, so pain and toil displaced rest in the life of man (Genesis 3:17-19).
In Exodus 31, the Spirit of God is at work again building a place for man to rest in the presence of God. Bezalel is filled with the Spirit of God and with ability, intelligence, knowledge, and craftsmanship—words that relate to God's creative activity in Proverbs 3:19-20. The Spirit enables Bezalel to craft the tabernacle and everything in it. Through the tabernacle, God will dwell with His people again. And just like the creation account in Genesis, the Spirit's work climaxes with the command to keep the Sabbath (Exodus 31:12-17).
God's purpose to give His people rest is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus, who through the Spirit is building the dwelling place of God (Ephesians 2:22) and giving His people rest (Matthew 11:28)!
This month's memory verse
4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand;
1. The work of the Spirit of God in Genesis 1 and Exodus 31 is creation. Where else in Scripture do we see the Spirit of God at work creating (or re-creating)?
2. When we look at our lives, would we describe them as restful? Frequently, we describe our days, weeks, and months as busy. In fact, being busy has become something like a virtue in our culture. Maybe we even feel guilty when we rest. But God promises to give us rest, if we will trust Him (Psalm 127:1-2; Isaiah 26:3). What is one way that you can begin to slow down and get more rest?
3. One of the biggest obstacles to rest in our culture is entertainment. We are tempted to fill every gap in our time with amusement of some kind. But amusement is not the same thing as rest. Frequently, they conflict with each other. In 2017, the CEO of Netflix said, "We actually compete with sleep . . . and we're winning!" Have you ever felt like entertainment was actually keeping you from rest?
4. Are there any activities you enjoy that help you feel rested? How can you do more of those things?
