Big Idea

God reveals the way and His will through His Word.

Key Verse | Exodus 33:18-19

Moses said, "Please show me your glory." And he said, "I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name 'The LORD.' And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy."

Exodus 33

The Command to Leave Sinai

The LORD said to Moses, “Depart; go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give it.’ I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.”

When the people heard this disastrous word, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments. For the LORD had said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you. So now take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do with you.’” Therefore the people of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.

The Tent of Meeting

Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the LORD would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp. Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise up, and each would stand at his tent door, and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent. When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the LORD 1 33:9 Hebrew he would speak with Moses. 10 And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door. 11 Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.

Moses' Intercession

12 Moses said to the LORD, “See, you say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’ 13 Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.” 14 And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” 15 And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. 16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?”

17 And the LORD said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” 18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” 19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The LORD.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” 21 And the LORD said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”

Dive Deeper | Exodus 33

Following the "golden calf" incident in Exodus 32, we see the fellowship between God and the Israelites is broken. God is faithful to His people and His promises, but He cannot dwell among them because of the broken covenant. His people are discouraged, a place we've all been before. I sat with this passage in a season of my own discouragement. I was in the middle of job uncertainty, a major life change, and found myself idolizing what was next. The Lord used this chapter as a reminder of my human nature amidst discouragement and God's kindness to me in it.

Just like how Moses asked in Exodus 33:12-13 for God to show him His ways, I, too, can want God to show me His plan when feeling discouraged. I can begin to put my trust in the idea that if God just disclosed His full plan to me, I would find peace and comfort. I can want to be all-knowing like God is and, not only do I want it, I can feel entitled to it! Yet, instead of giving Moses his desires, God reminds him in Exodus 33:14, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." God, the ultimate and all-knowing Comforter, promises His presence will be with us in whatever we are walking into, regardless of how much we understand.

In response to the Lord, Moses changes his request. In Exodus 33:18, Moses asks God to show him His glory. Did you catch that? He asks for more of God and less of his desires. God promises Moses that His goodness will pass before him, knowing that was best for him. Amid the Israelites' and Moses' discouragement, God doesn't turn from them but further reveals Himself. God delights in His people knowing who He is: a gracious and merciful God. In my season of discouragement and uncertainty, I chose to lean further into God and His character. In doing so, my spirit was refreshed—not in knowing the next step, but rather in being further reminded of the goodness and glory of my Lord.

This month's memory verse

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand;

– Philippians 4:4-5

Discussion Questions

1. The Lord delights in spending time with us and us with Him. Do you trust that the Lord wants you to dwell with Him? What does dwelling with the Lord look like to you?

2. Moses felt comfortable coming to the Lord with all of his questions and uncertainty. Do you feel that level of comfort to boldly ask of the Lord? What keeps you from approaching God with boldness?

3. In what area of your life are you looking for the Lord to clearly lay out His plan for you? How do you find comfort during uncertainty?

4. Do you trust that the Lord wants what is best for you? If not, what is keeping you from trusting that?

5. How can you seek more of God's glory in this season? Share your answer with a community group member or trusted friend to help you seek more of the Lord.

Good morning Abbey. I’m with you on dwelling, presence and glory. Q1. I love the word “dwell”. GQs has some great teaching- https://www.gotquestions.org/dwell-house-Lord-forever.html https://www.gotquestions.org/let-the-word-of-Christ-dwell-in-you-richly.html https://www.gotquestions.org/God-is-our-dwelling-place.html These three pieces explain a lot about why the Israelites valued their relationship with God so highly. Q2. I’ve learned the hard way that pushing for my own way is like pushing on a string. Q3. Statistically, at 65, I’ve got 15 years. I’d love some signal of where he’s leading me. Yet, I know the truth of Psalm 119:105. One day at a time. Q4. It’s beyond any doubt at this point. Though I can puzzle at His actions I know His are better than mine. Q5. Seek to know Him more fully so that trust, surrender and obedience are as natural as breathing.

Thinking a lot about the presence of the LORD. What does that mean to the Israelites? If it’s big, why risk breaking the covenant? What’s with Aaron’s passivity, deflection and blame shifting? So, I’m struggling/grasping a bit regarding how to link to their loss of relationship. In a class awhile back one of the questions we were asked was to evaluate Moses’s leadership style, methods, and practices. It was a very hard exercise but incredibly fruitful. What I learned/relearned was how fundamentally critical good leadership is. Further, when a leader is early on in his/her learning curve it can be very messy for the people. It’s even messier when you have a leader who is wrongly focused. A message quite awhile back made the point that God’s design for those with power was to serve others rather than self. Not very common today. In almost 40 full years working for three different investment banks I have had something like 17/18 CEOs. And about the same number of direct bosses, (Managing Directors) aka MDs. Only 1 of each was effective at all. Not surprisingly, the organizations suffered and vastly underachieved.

Stretching the analogy…I see in the Israelites a similar dynamic. They want and need to connect with the CEO. They’re incredibly dependent on Him. When their “stiff necked” rebellion and misbehavior lead the CEO to cut them loose they “mourn” this “disastrous word”. They’re humiliated. They’re no longer His people. He won’t be with them but sends a surrogate. In their watching, I sense huge anxiety and fear. I get it. All too well. Moses clearly sees what is needed and pleads on their behalf for Yahweh to provide it. To me, the power of Moses’s good leadership is shown when Yahweh responds right away. The LORD has given me, and each of us, a flock to shepherd. I can look back and see a long list of mistakes that cost my sheep dearly. In surrender and discipleship, Yahweh teaches me and gives me examples to follow. Most importantly, the Great Shepherd. What’s the manual? Psalm 23. The Sermon on the Mount. The life of Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Samuel, David, and many others. Abraham and Jacob show me that you can start poorly but redeem that by finishing strong. Of these, Psalm 23 is my favorite writing and Joseph is my favorite Patriarch.

Re: Ex 33:11 Ex 33:11 (NASB) Thus >>>the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend.<<< When Moses returned to the camp, his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent. See also Gen 32:30; Dt 5:4, 34:10; Ezk 20:35; 1Cor 13:12 Re: Ex 33:14 See Mt 28:20 Re: Ex 33:16 Ex 33:16 (NASB) “For how then can it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? >>>Is it not by Your going with us, so that we, I and Your people, may be distinguished from all the other people who are upon the face of the earth?”<<< See Zech 8:23; Jn 1:1-2,14 Re: Ex 33:18-23 There is a typological marvel at work in these verses…something known in rabbinic interpretation as a “remez” (Eng “hint”). Perhaps the most Messianic passage in Exodus, the text contains a number of typological references to the Messiah (e.g. the Rock, the Cleft of the Rock, a place beside Him, His Hand, His Glory) and a sequence of events which foreshadow G-d’s salvific plan to visit His people through the advent of Messiah. Don’t my this… Exodus 33:18-23 (Paraphrased, Amplified, and Annotated) Then Moses said, “I pray You, show me Your glory!” And G-d said, “I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you (My ‘Good Teacher’ will pass before you; See ‘good’ in Mk 10:18; Lk 18:19), and will proclaim the name of the LORD before you (for He IS the L-RD and His name is ‘the Word of G-d’; See Jn 1:1-2,14 and ‘name’ in Rev 19:13); and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show compassion on whom I will show compassion.” (See Rom 9:15) And G-d said, “You cannot see My face (You cannot foresee the hour of My approach…My coming), for no man can see Me and live!” (See Jn 1:18) Then the L-RD said, “Behold, there is a place by Me (a place Messiah will prepared for you; See ‘place’ in Jn 14:2-3; See also Eph 2:6b; Col 3:1b,3), and you shall stand there on the Rock (abiding on the Rock, who is Messiah; See ‘rock’ in Gen 49:24, Dt 32:18,31; 1Sa 2:2; Ps 18:31; 118:22; Isa 8:14; 28:16); and it will come about, while My glory (while the Glory of G-d made manifest in Messiah; Heb 1:3a) is passing by, that I will put you in the Cleft of the Rock (I will hide you in Messiah; See Ps 27:5; Col 3:3 and “cave” in 1Kgs 19:9,13) and cover you with My hand (I will conceal you in Messiah Yeshua; See Ps 27:5 and “hand” in Ex 15:6; Ps 98:1; Isa 49:2,16; 59:1; Acts 5:31; 7:55-56; Heb 10:12) until I have passed by. “Then I will take My hand away (Messiah will depart; Jn 1:11; Acts 1:9) and you shall see My back (looking back in hindsight after Messiah’s ascension, you’ll recognize more fully G-d has visited you in the person of Messiah Yeshua; See Lk 19:44; Jn 1:1-2,11,14,18; 10:30; 14:9b; Jn 20:28; Col 1:15,19; 2:9; Tit 2:13), but My face shall not be seen.” (See Jn 1:18)

Hello Abbey, this is very encouraging. Thank you so much. This is a devotional word lingering over. we can seek more of God’s glory by camping out in the psalms daily. “Whoever does these things will never be shaken.” Psalm 15:5. Thanks again & Praise the Lord!

Hi Abbey! Hope parenting has been a good and new journey. Re: Pizza in your bio.... - 1st Place: Industrial Pizza in Richardson - 2nd Place: Cane Rosso (several locations) - 3rd Place: you let me know! Summary of Chapter 33 for me is this: - There IS consequence for sin (aftermath of the golden calf). - The separation from God IS a result of disobedience. - Moses intercessory prayer IS foreshadowing of the greatest mediator yet to come. The One that would ultimately and forever be able to reconcile God and humanity (Jesus). PS: can you imagine trying to shepherd millions of people to the promise land!? Literally. Millions.

The Bible reveals who God is and who we are. Stiff necked. Deut 9:4-6 but God kept his promise to Abraham Duet 7:7-8 God tells Israel they are a stiff necked people but I spole to a really interesting Jewish holacaust survivor I sat to on a plane once who actually showed my a bullet wound she got. She said that there is a tradition that God went around the nations to see who would follow His law and only the Jews would.... that would not be found in the Bible.... The prognosis of a stiff necked person, said by Moses, said by God, is bad Proverbs 29:1 – “He who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck, will suddenly be destroyed and that without remedy.” Applies to us as well and we all need redemption and a change of heart.

Thank you, Abbey! In the margin of my Bible, next to Moses' request of Yahweh to "Show me Your glory," I have written "Luke 9," where we find the story of the Mount of Transfiguration. Verse 29 tells us that Peter, James and John saw Jesus' glory: "As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning." I love love love that many hundreds of years after Moses asked to see God's glory, who answered by allowing him to peek at His back side, God also answered this prayer by allowing Moses to see the Son on earth in HIS glory . . . and, as it turns out, Moses' glory! Verse 30 says, "Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus." Lord, today I pray the same bold prayer as Moses. Please let me see Your glory? I have no idea what that would look like for me in 2023, but I'm going to ask.

We can't see God's glory full strength and live, but we can see and feel God's goodness. We can see God veiled the flesh in the incarnation in Jesus. The angels in Isiah 6 said the whole earth if full of His glory. We make not see His glory full strength but we do 'Declare His glory among the nations" Psalm 96:3 "Taste and see that thee LORD (God) is good" Psalm 34

1. I do trust the Lord wants us to spend time with Him. For me, dwelling with the Lord would be time focusing on the Lord specifically, reading or thinking of His words only and how they can be applied in daily life. 2. Yes, I go to the Lord with everything. However, it is difficult for me to approach God when I experience extreme pain. 3. I would love for the Lord give me His plan for me for making money. I would love to hear his thoughts on money. During uncertainty, I keep praying to God for answers, reading the Bible, and walking with Jesus. 4. Yes, I trust the Lord wants what is best for me. 5. I can seek more of God’s glory this season by caring for what I do and caring for others with whom I interact. It helps to lead by example.
