Big Idea

God's instruction can always be trusted.

Key Verse | Numbers 35:34

"You shall not defile the land in which you live, in the midst of which I dwell, for I the LORD dwell in the midst of the people of Israel."

Numbers 35 - 36

Cities for the Levites

The LORD spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, “Command the people of Israel to give to the Levites some of the inheritance of their possession as cities for them to dwell in. And you shall give to the Levites pasturelands around the cities. The cities shall be theirs to dwell in, and their pasturelands shall be for their cattle and for their livestock and for all their beasts. The pasturelands of the cities, which you shall give to the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city outward a thousand cubits 1 35:4 A cubit was about 18 inches or 45 centimeters all around. And you shall measure, outside the city, on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the middle. This shall belong to them as pastureland for their cities.

The cities that you give to the Levites shall be the six cities of refuge, where you shall permit the manslayer to flee, and in addition to them you shall give forty-two cities. All the cities that you give to the Levites shall be forty-eight, with their pasturelands. And as for the cities that you shall give from the possession of the people of Israel, from the larger tribes you shall take many, and from the smaller tribes you shall take few; each, in proportion to the inheritance that it inherits, shall give of its cities to the Levites.”

Cities of Refuge

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 10 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 11 then you shall select cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the manslayer who kills any person without intent may flee there. 12 The cities shall be for you a refuge from the avenger, that the manslayer may not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment. 13 And the cities that you give shall be your six cities of refuge. 14 You shall give three cities beyond the Jordan, and three cities in the land of Canaan, to be cities of refuge. 15 These six cities shall be for refuge for the people of Israel, and for the stranger and for the sojourner among them, that anyone who kills any person without intent may flee there.

16 But if he struck him down with an iron object, so that he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall be put to death. 17 And if he struck him down with a stone tool that could cause death, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall be put to death. 18 Or if he struck him down with a wooden tool that could cause death, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall be put to death. 19 The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death. 20 And if he pushed him out of hatred or hurled something at him, lying in wait, so that he died, 21 or in enmity struck him down with his hand, so that he died, then he who struck the blow shall be put to death. He is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.

22 But if he pushed him suddenly without enmity, or hurled anything on him without lying in wait 23 or used a stone that could cause death, and without seeing him dropped it on him, so that he died, though he was not his enemy and did not seek his harm, 24 then the congregation shall judge between the manslayer and the avenger of blood, in accordance with these rules. 25 And the congregation shall rescue the manslayer from the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge to which he had fled, and he shall live in it until the death of the high priest who was anointed with the holy oil. 26 But if the manslayer shall at any time go beyond the boundaries of his city of refuge to which he fled, 27 and the avenger of blood finds him outside the boundaries of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood kills the manslayer, he shall not be guilty of blood. 28 For he must remain in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest, but after the death of the high priest the manslayer may return to the land of his possession. 29 And these things shall be for a statute and rule for you throughout your generations in all your dwelling places.

30 If anyone kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on the evidence of witnesses. But no person shall be put to death on the testimony of one witness. 31 Moreover, you shall accept no ransom for the life of a murderer, who is guilty of death, but he shall be put to death. 32 And you shall accept no ransom for him who has fled to his city of refuge, that he may return to dwell in the land before the death of the high priest. 33 You shall not pollute the land in which you live, for blood pollutes the land, and no atonement can be made for the land for the blood that is shed in it, except by the blood of the one who shed it. 34 You shall not defile the land in which you live, in the midst of which I dwell, for I the LORD dwell in the midst of the people of Israel.”

Marriage of Female Heirs

The heads of the fathers' houses of the clan of the people of Gilead the son of Machir, son of Manasseh, from the clans of the people of Joseph, came near and spoke before Moses and before the chiefs, the heads of the fathers' houses of the people of Israel. They said, “The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance by lot to the people of Israel, and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters. But if they are married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the people of Israel, then their inheritance will be taken from the inheritance of our fathers and added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry. So it will be taken away from the lot of our inheritance. And when the jubilee of the people of Israel comes, then their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry, and their inheritance will be taken from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.”

And Moses commanded the people of Israel according to the word of the LORD, saying, “The tribe of the people of Joseph is right. This is what the LORD commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad: ‘Let them marry whom they think best, only they shall marry within the clan of the tribe of their father. The inheritance of the people of Israel shall not be transferred from one tribe to another, for every one of the people of Israel shall hold on to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers. And every daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the people of Israel shall be wife to one of the clan of the tribe of her father, so that every one of the people of Israel may possess the inheritance of his fathers. So no inheritance shall be transferred from one tribe to another, for each of the tribes of the people of Israel shall hold on to its own inheritance.’”

10 The daughters of Zelophehad did as the LORD commanded Moses, 11 for Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to sons of their father's brothers. 12 They were married into the clans of the people of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of their father's clan.

13 These are the commandments and the rules that the LORD commanded through Moses to the people of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

Dive Deeper | Numbers 35 - 36

Jehovah-Jireh! Does God provide? Yes, he does! Just ask Levites, murderers, manslayers, and the daughters of Zelophehad.

DO NOT SPEED-READ THIS PASSAGE!

I learned years ago that 2 Timothy 3:16 is 100% true. So here we go! Let's see what the Lord has for us in Numbers 35-36.

First, we see the provision God has for the priests (who can't inherit land) by providing 48 cities for them to live in, all fairly allocated, including land for grazing livestock.

Second, we see our God who is pure, just, and fair, making sure that the land's purity is justly and fairly preserved. Anyone, including non-Israelites, accused of causing an unintentional murder (i.e., a manslayer), is provided protection and gets a fair hearing from impartial elders. Even a murderer can only be convicted on the testimony of at least two witnesses. In Joshua 20:7-8, the names of the cities of refuge are given and, translated into English, mean righteousness, shoulder (resting place), fellowship, fortress, heights (heavenly places), circle/complete/happiness. What comfort these names must have given!

Third, when the High Priest died, his death "atoned" for the manslayer who could then return to his home. Familiar?

Fourth, God provided land and assigned it to each tribe. The God who is good, kind, and just set rules so that the land would stay in each tribe, and each could live in their God-given land.

Finally, God provides redemption for Zelophehad's daughters who were the offspring of the unfaithful Exodus generation by granting them land as well!

An excerpt from Dr. Constable's notes on Numbers 36 at p. 195 observes, "Zelophehad's daughters exemplified the faith that tenaciously clung to the Lord despite adverse circumstances. In contrast to the shortsightedness and concomitant unbelief of the first generation, the daughters' eschatological outlook provided the necessary impetus for obeying the stipulations of the covenant."

This month's memory verse

58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

– 1 Corinthians 15:58

Discussion Questions

1. Consider the times you have been unjustly accused. How were you treated? Compare your treatment with God's provision as conveyed in this passage. Consider discussing with your community, family, or friends.

2. Consider the times you were JUSTLY accused. Compare your treatment then with God's standard as conveyed here.

3. For what mistakes of parents or ancestors is God offering you redemption through a different set of choices? Next time you see me, ask me what mine are.

4. How has God provided for you in ways that reflect His character of goodness, kindness, and justice?

5. In what ways has God made known to you the unmerited favor of His patience, mercy, and grace?

Re: Num 35:25 Num 35:25 (NASB) ‘The congregation shall deliver the manslayer from the hand of the blood avenger, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge to which he fled; and he shall live in it >>>until the death of the high priest<<< who was anointed with the holy oil. Illustrates the important concept of "the death of the righteous atones." See also Jos 20:6. Re: Num 35:30 Num 35:30 (NASB) ‘If anyone kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death at the evidence of witnesses, but >>>no person shall be put to death on the testimony of one witness.<<< See Jn 8:10-11 Re: Num 36:8 Num 36:8 (NASB) “Every daughter who comes into possession of an inheritance of any tribe of the sons of Israel >>>shall be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father<<<, so that the sons of Israel each may possess the inheritance of his fathers. “The leaders of the tribe of Manasseh then came before Moses to discuss the legal implications of the case of Zelophehad (i.e., Tzelafchad: צְלָפְחָד), whom you will recall was a man of the tribe of Manasseh who died in the desert without any sons to be his heir, but only daughters whom the LORD allowed to inherit their father's portion in the land. These leaders were now concerned that if these daughters were to marry men from another tribe, the original inheritance would be transferred to the other tribe, thereby diminishing the inheritance given to their own tribe. Moses then ruled that to prevent the transference of inheritance from one tribe to another, >>>the daughters of Zelophehad were only permitted to marry men within their own tribe.<<< Therefore it became a general law that no family clan's inheritance may be transferred to another tribe, and any woman who had a land inheritance could only marry someone within her own tribe.” — Hebrew For Christians https://www.hebrew4christians.com/Scripture/Parashah/Summaries/Masei/masei.html

HUUUUUUUUUUUGH!!!!! I had to make myself read the passage *before* jumping to your devo, but when I read "DO NOT SPEED-READ THIS PASSAGE!" I laughed to myself . . . I guess it would have worked out to do it that way! God's provision and direction for the daughters of Zelophehad is a sweet peek into His heart of compassion and love for women. What a satisfying balance He strikes: women inheritors of land can marry whoever they choose (WHAT??!! That's in the Bible??! You mean women are not automatically the property of misogynistic male tyrants?!!), but they need to choose men in their tribe to keep the inheritance within the tribe. I just love this!

1. I was truly demoralized. I have discussed the situation with friends and community. The demoralizing situation is resolved. The demoralizing situation reminds me staying to God pays off. He will see you through anything. 2. God is everywhere and knows everything. It is best to always be yourself and to do your best as God prefers. It is best to act responsibly in everything. 3. We have spent time apart and now things are more level. A lot of good truth and good stories are being shared. 4. God helps me understand He is higher than all of us, and we are all actually OK. 5. He shows us an example of love, that we each can love and we each can be loved.

The cities of refuge , the sanctuary cities, were for accidental and unpremeditated situations, not cities of blanket amnesty or cities where crimes wren't prosecuted. God made provision for accidents. Also this is a restraint for an avenger getting carried away by a crime of passion in revenge. Job gave his daughters inheritance with their brothers. He was very 'progressive' on that. Lots of the law of Moses is like case law. Additional cases can be added to case law and they were here. The case law of property staying with the family has an addition specific case law for the case of no living sons. The daughters of Zelophehad are the first recorded legal challenge in the Bible and God said they were right. This case aw would later have another case where the women would have to marry in their tribe so the property doesn't move to another tribe. The Case law was not ignored but additional cases added. Perhaps it was meant in part for us to think on the particular case. A general principle would be different which is not case law.
