Big Idea

God's definition of success is faithfulness.

Key Verse | Joshua 2:11

And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.

Joshua 2

Rahab Hides the Spies

And Joshua the son of Nun sent 1 2:1 Or had sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there. And it was told to the king of Jericho, “Behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.” Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.” But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, “True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. And when the gate was about to be closed at dark, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.” But she had brought them up to the roof and hid them with the stalks of flax that she had laid in order on the roof. So the men pursued after them on the way to the Jordan as far as the fords. And the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out.

Before the men 2 2:8 Hebrew they lay down, she came up to them on the roof and said to the men, “I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. 10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction. 3 2:10 That is, set apart (devoted) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction) 11 And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. 12 Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father's house, and give me a sure sign 13 that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.” 14 And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the LORD gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.”

15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall, so that she lived in the wall. 16 And she said 4 2:16 Or had said to them, “Go into the hills, or the pursuers will encounter you, and hide there three days until the pursuers have returned. Then afterward you may go your way.” 17 The men said to her, “We will be guiltless with respect to this oath of yours that you have made us swear. 18 Behold, when we come into the land, you shall tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you shall gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers, and all your father's household. 19 Then if anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be guiltless. But if a hand is laid on anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head. 20 But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless with respect to your oath that you have made us swear.” 21 And she said, “According to your words, so be it.” Then she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

22 They departed and went into the hills and remained there three days until the pursuers returned, and the pursuers searched all along the way and found nothing. 23 Then the two men returned. They came down from the hills and passed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they told him all that had happened to them. 24 And they said to Joshua, “Truly the LORD has given all the land into our hands. And also, all the inhabitants of the land melt away because of us.”

Dive Deeper | Joshua 2

In Joshua 2, the most unlikely heroine emerges in Rahab, a prostitute. Joshua's two spies were sent into fortified Jericho to search the land and gain perspective on potential challenges. Rahab kept the two spies safe and in secrecy in their time of need.

In one statement, Rahab not only gave intel about the spies' mission, but she also displayed great faith in the God of Israel. She says in Joshua 2:11, "And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath." The first part of Rahab's statement confirms God's promise: The Lord has given Jericho to Israel (Joshua 2:9). The second part of Rahab's statement declares her faith in God. She fully believed that the God of Israel was also the God over Jericho and the one true God. This powerful declaration of faith is followed by obediently keeping the spies safe and later tying a scarlet cord in the window to mark her house.

If I am honest with myself, I have always struggled with this passage from Joshua 2. Why would God choose to use someone like Rahab? From a sinful human perspective, we can tend to look down on others and think their sin is worse than our own. But we know from Romans 3:23, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

The story of Rahab shows God's redemptive character and grace. The most unlikely of pagan women and her entire family were not only spared by God but incorporated into God's people. Eventually, both King David and Jesus Christ were descendants of Rahab (Matthew 1:5). God's desire is for "all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth" (1 Timothy 2:4). The beauty of Joshua 2 is that we can clearly see God's salvation plan throughout history. There is no one that the Lord cannot use for His glory!

This month's memory verse

58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

– 1 Corinthians 15:58

Discussion Questions

1. Is there anyone in your life that you believe is "too far gone" for God to save? I pray that as you read this passage and reflect on it, you can see the grace of God that is willing to save all who believe, no matter what they have done. No one is too far gone for the redemptive grace of God.

2. Rahab's belief in God caused her to act. As believers, we are called to obediently follow Christ through our actions. In the book of James, we see that "faith apart from works is dead" (James 2:26). In what ways do you see works flowing as the by-product of your faith? In what ways do you possibly see yourself running from the works God has put before you?

3. The bold stories that spread about the power of God caused the hearts of the people in Jericho to "melt." Is sharing your testimony with anyone who will listen part of your daily life? There is power in sharing how God has transformed the lives of believers. I encourage you to check out the Watermark News for stories of life change every week.

Good morning, Jessica! Love this devo! Whatever place there is in my heart for idols I know that God can purify that place as easily as He took down the walls of Jericho. One BIBLE nerd item I note is that of the 12 spies at Kadesh, only two had it right. In Jericho, God only needed two. ——————————————————————— Q1. For a long time I believed it was possible for a person to be too far gone. And that I was on the list. Near the top. 10 years in prodigal, re:Gen, and men’s abortion recovery have showed that God’s plan is that no one is too far gone. A favorite pastor recently offered this in a group text exchange, (edited): ‘Sin is… “The deeply habituated disordered desire to be God rather than love him.” ‘ “Hell is full of people who would rather be God than love him.” Awhile back, another pastor noted this, “No one goes to Hell who wants to go to heaven.” Q2. The reason Rahab is in the Hall of faith is that her faith was a standout example. Amy recently heard this, “Have faith such that when you go after Moby Dick that you bring tartar sauce.” For me it’s not so much running from works but trying to decide which “good things” God wants me to choose and which are not for me. Q3. Last year Amy noted the idea of developing a 10-sentence testimony. This was very, very helpful. I’ve also heard of a “bus-stop testimony” and an “elevator testimony”. Recently, I have been able to reconnect with a bunch of college friends. In these convos I looked for any opportunities that the Holy Spirit was presenting that called for a response that connected to my testimony. Several developed exactly that way. What a blessing! I am engaged in some very deep discussions with these friends. We’ll see what God has planned!!

What if you found out that your mother was a prostitute? Or your grandmother? Or your great grandmother? How would that impact your image of yourself and your identity. Now…what if you also found out that she betrayed “her people” to an invading enemy force and all of them were killed except her and her family? What impact would that have? Hold that thought for moment… Now suppose you found out that her action ended a culture of idol worship and sacrifice that resulted in all manner of evil and Satanic practices. And that she did so because she had come to hear of a great God, Yahweh-the God of the Israelites. She heard, knew, and trusted that He was the one who had built a great nation out of a few nomads. That this God was the creator of the universe. That he exercises dominion over the land, sea, and stars. And that He loved her and wanted a relationship with her. And that He made thousands of promises to all his believers. Incredible promises that only He could make. And from those promises came innumerable blessings. Not only eternal life forever but an abundant life now that was filled with all manner of richness and joy. Oh, and by the way, He had a son who came and atoned for all her sins and yours. And that son was descended from your direct relative… …Rahab, the Jericho prostitute, Matthew 1:5 https://www.gotquestions.org/life-Rahab.html https://www.gotquestions.org/scarlet-thread.html And she’s in the Hall of Faith in Hebrews 11, https://www.gotquestions.org/Hall-of-Faith.html ------------------------------------------------ Now, how do you feel about yourself and your identity? You’ve been adopted into God’s family. You have a full and rich inheritance that dwarfs anything earth could offer. Go claim it.

Re: Jos 2:1 Jos 2:1 (NASB) Then Joshua the son of Nun sent two men as spies secretly from Shittim, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” So they went and came into the house of a harlot whose name was >>>Rahab,<<< and lodged there. Ultimately, Rahab will marry Salmon and become the mother Boaz (Ru 4:21), thus placing her in the lineage of Yeshua, the Despised Messiah. (Mt 1:5) As we have frequently seen in our journey through the Torah already, the progenitors of the Despised Messiah were often mistreated, despised, and unrecognized. However, the story of Rahab includes another recurring pattern often found in the annuls of the Despised Messiah’s approach. As may also be found in the stories of Jacob and Esau, Joseph, and Judah and Tamar, when you read Rahab's story >>>notice the presence of three elements: a transaction, a deception/concealment, and a revelation.<<< Re: Jos 2:4, 6, 16-22; Jos 6:17 Jos 2:4 (NASB) But >>>the woman had taken the two men and hidden them,<<< and she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. >>>A concealment<<<…not just of the spies themselves, but also the beginning of a plot that will ultimately lead to the deliverance of Rahab and her entire family (Jos 6:23; >>>a revelation<<<)… Rahab through whom the Despised Messiah would continue His approach. (Num 24:17) Re: Jos 2:5 Jos 2:5 (NASB) “It came about when it was time to shut the gate at dark, that >>>the men went out; I do not know where the men went.<<< Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.” >>>A deception<<< Re: Jos 2:10-11 Jos 2:10-11 (NASB) “For >>>we have heard<<< how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. >>>When we heard<<< it, our hearts melted and no courage remained in any man any longer because of you; for the LORD your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.” The people of Jericho “heard,” whereas the Israelites had >>>witnessed.<<< Yet, in citing the parting of the Red Sea forty years prior, Israel’s enemies are demonstrating longer memories/greater faith than the Israelites themselves had many times in the face of adversity. See also Heb 11:31; Jas 2:19,25. Re: Jos 2:12-13 Jos 2:12-13 (NASB) “Now therefore, please swear to me by the LORD, >>>since I have dealt kindly with you,<<< that you also will deal kindly with my father's household, and >>>give me a pledge of *[faithfulness] truth, and *[let live] spare my father and my mother and my brothers and my sisters, with all who belong to them, and deliver our *[souls] lives from death.”<<< >>>A transaction<<<…kindness for a pledge faithfulness and the deliverance of her entire family. Re: Jos 2:14 Jos 2:14 (NASB) So the men said to her, >>>“Our life for yours if you do not tell this business of ours; and it shall come about when the LORD gives us the land that we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.”<<< A foreshadowing of Acts 10:34-35? Re: Jos 2:16 Jos 2:16 (NASB) She said to them, “Go to the hill country, so that the pursuers will not happen upon you, and >>>hide yourselves there for three days<<< until the pursuers return. Then afterward you may go on your way.” “Three days”…coincidence? See also Jos 2:22.

Hey here's I just discovered in this passage I 've never noticed before. (Please forgive me if this is an old observation to anyone else.) Rahabs's family has been living in fear from a distance ever since the Red Sea incident, which was over 40 years ago and only would have been remembered by Joshua and Caleb among the Hebrews. What a wonderful God who, even among heathens in Jericho, preserves to His own the people who will give Him glory!

The first person to turn to God in the promised land in Joshua's day was a harlot. They first minor prophet was Hosea and his harlot wife. Both stunning stories of grace Dragon woman, aka story, aka Rahab was transformed. Just as God conquered the sea monsters poetically in the Exodus, God conquers the monsters in lives, redeeming them. . Spoiler alert, Rahab will marry into a leader of Israel's family and her past not held against her and will be in the line of the Messiah.
