Big Idea
God with us.
"'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.'"
Who doesn't love a good ol' small-town story? Whether it's the king of country music being born in Poteet, Texas, or the King of kings being born in Bethlehem, a small town can hold a special place in our hearts. We read in Micah 5 a foretelling of the future birth of Jesus the Messiah and ruler over Israel. I'm not going out on a limb here when I say this, but it's by and large the greatest prophecy Jesus fulfilled . . . you know, His birth. Now this small-town story was one in waiting (as the book of Micah was written around 700 B.C.) as Bethlehem had to wait to see its shining, or should I say, bright-star moment.
We are right now in a way like Bethlehem and all of Judah and Israel. But rather than anxiously awaiting Jesus' birth, we are awaiting His return! We are living in a time when God is with us everywhere and, in turn, we should glorify Him always until He is back. The residents of small towns always pay tribute to their stars, so shouldn't we do the same for Jesus? Our water towers should have His name written in John Deere green, our restaurants should have apps and entrées that pay tribute to Him, and our schools should bear His name. We, too, often hold our faith close to the chest, covering it from the folks who "drive through" our lives when we should be putting our faith boldly on display. God's calling for us is to make disciples. I see no better start than to display to people that He is your savior!
In Matthew 2:2 we see the Magi (or Wise Men) following a star to come worship baby Jesus solely because of what was written by Micah 700 years before. I pray that my heart can be pulled that strongly toward Jesus every day—not just on Sundays or when I meet with my community group. I pray we all begin to devote ourselves daily and take up our own cross because our Messiah is coming back!
This month's memory verse
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
1. In keeping with the small-town theme, what are two ways you could "display" Jesus' name in your life?
2. What is one thing you do daily that helps you grow closer to Jesus and, conversely, what is one thing you could stop doing daily that would bring you closer to Jesus?
3. How often do you think about the return of Christ? If you feel it's infrequent, come up with two tangible ideas you could implement to remind yourself daily of His return.
As we gear up to release even more features for Join The Journey in 2025, our staff team, unfortunately, no longer has the margin to continue to support the comment functionality. We have big things in store for Join The Journey 2025. Stay tuned!
