Central Truth
Trials give us a reason to sing God's praises.
For you, O God, tested us;
you purified us like refined silver.
(Psalm 66:10)
1
Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
2
sing the glory of his name;
give to him glorious praise!
3
Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!
So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you.
4
All the earth worships you
and sings praises to you;
they sing praises to your name.” Selah
5
Come and see what God has done:
he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man.
6
He turned the sea into dry land;
they passed through the river on foot.
There did we rejoice in him,
7
who rules by his might forever,
whose eyes keep watch on the nations—
let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah
8
Bless our God, O peoples;
let the sound of his praise be heard,
9
who has kept our soul among the living
and has not let our feet slip.
10
For you, O God, have tested us;
you have tried us as silver is tried.
11
You brought us into the net;
you laid a crushing burden on our backs;
12
you let men ride over our heads;
we went through fire and through water;
yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance.
13
I will come into your house with burnt offerings;
I will perform my vows to you,
14
that which my lips uttered
and my mouth promised when I was in trouble.
15
I will offer to you burnt offerings of fattened animals,
with the smoke of the sacrifice of rams;
I will make an offering of bulls and goats. Selah
16
Come and hear, all you who fear God,
and I will tell what he has done for my soul.
17
I cried to him with my mouth,
and high praise was on
1
66:17
Hebrew under
my tongue.
2
66:17
Or and he was exalted with my tongue
18
If I had cherished iniquity in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened.
19
But truly God has listened;
he has attended to the voice of my prayer.
20
Blessed be God,
because he has not rejected my prayer
or removed his steadfast love from me!
When we are down in the valley, we see God work the most. No one initially wants to go into a "valley" in their life. Yet, those same people can often be found praising God coming out on the other side and more often would not trade the experience. How does that happen? What does a "valley" experience do for a believer?
First, we must remember that God allows our trials. Trials and difficulties are to us what fire is to silver, what hurdles are to the sprinter. They refine us and make us stronger as long as we don't get too discouraged and give up. Charles Spurgeon, the famous preacher, said that "God had one Son without sin, but He never had a son without trial." Why would we expect any different? Going down into the valley changes our focus. All of a sudden, our focus is off of ourselves and onto God. What are you doing, Lord? What is up with this? I can't do this, can't handle this. Lord, help me!
The last several years in my own life have been one long, continuous lesson in trusting the LORD and not myself. In my business, it seems I am given only the amount of direction I need for TODAY. That is a tough situation for someone who would prefer to have a search light on the road ahead, not a pin light. Yet, God is faithful every day and is continually at work teaching me that He can be trusted no matter what and through whatever. It is a lesson I desperately want to learn because I see that, once I learn it, I will be able to live without fear.
Remember, oftentimes the road to heaven is through tribulation. Will we trust God in the middle of that valley? Can we rest in the fact that God has the reins, that He does love us, and that this momentary light affliction WILL produce an eternal weight of glory? Will we praise Him or curse the circumstances? When you can't see His hand, trust His heart.
1. Can you think of a time in your life when you faced great difficulty or trials?
2. Looking back, can you see God's fingerprints?
3. What did you learn that you could share with others to encourage them?
