Central Truth
God wants to be number one. The world will flatter you and seduce you, but the world will leave you empty and cold.
Say to wisdom, "You are my sister,"
and call understanding a close relative,
so that they may keep you from the adulterous woman,
from the loose woman who flatters you with her words.
(Proverbs 7:4-5)
1
My son, keep my words
and treasure up my commandments with you;
2
keep my commandments and live;
keep my teaching as the apple of your eye;
3
bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4
Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
and call insight your intimate friend,
5
to keep you from the forbidden

For at the window of my house
I have looked out through my lattice,

and I have seen among the simple,
I have perceived among the youths,
a young man lacking sense,
8
passing along the street near her corner,
taking the road to her house

in the twilight, in the evening,
at the time of night and darkness.
10
And behold, the woman meets him,
dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart.

She is loud and wayward;
her feet do not stay at home;
12
now in the street, now in the market,
and at every corner she lies in wait.
13
She seizes him and kisses him,
and with bold face she says to him,

“I had to offer sacrifices,

so now I have come out to meet you,
to seek you eagerly, and I have found you.

I have spread my couch with coverings,
colored linens from Egyptian linen;
17
I have perfumed my bed with myrrh,

Come, let us take our fill of love till morning;
let us delight ourselves with love.

For my husband is not at home;
he has gone on a long journey;

he took a bag of money with him;
at full moon he will come home.”

With much seductive speech she persuades him;
with her smooth talk she compels him.

All at once he follows her,
as an ox goes to the slaughter,
or as a stag is caught fast

7:22
Probable reading (compare Septuagint, Vulgate, Syriac); Hebrew as a chain to discipline a fool
23
till an arrow pierces its liver;
as a bird rushes into a snare;
he does not know that it will cost him his life.
24
And now, O sons, listen to me,
and be attentive to the words of my mouth.
25
Let not your heart turn aside to her ways;
do not stray into her paths,
26
for many a victim has she laid low,
and all her slain are a mighty throng.

Her house is the way to Sheol,
going down to the chambers of death.
I volunteer in Watermark's Divorce Care ministry. We try to provide comfort, healing, and wisdom to those facing separation or divorce. As you can imagine, I have heard a lot of stories of how adultery has destroyed marriages. But how is your marriage to God going? I bet a lot of people read this chapter in Proverbs and think, "This doesn't really apply to me. I've never had an affair. I've never been unfaithful to my spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend." I encourage you to look past this description of traditional adultery and think about how we treat God.
"Jesus said to him, 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment." (Matthew 22:37-38) Scripture also says that we "must not worship any other god, for the Lord . . . is a jealous God." (Exodus 34:14) Has anyone out there put another person or thing before God? I struggle with this on a daily basis.
Our nature is to be dazzled by the world that flatters us with its words. Our nature is to be drawn to money, power, sex, possessions, and perversions. The world has made its "bed with elegant coverings." (Proverbs 7:16) The world entices us with "persuasive words." (Proverbs 7:21) Television, movies, and billboards tell us that we are not enough. Companies spend billions of dollars to seduce us into using their products. Peers pressure us into doing things we know we should not.
Making God number one in my life is a very hard thing to do. I need God's Word. I also need a community of believers around me. I need men holding me accountable. But most of all, I need a Savior. Even with the best support team around me, I cannot fend off the world without the help of Christ living in me. The adulteress went after the young man who lacked wisdom. Without wisdom, we're all easy targets. I love what Proverbs 16:16a says, "How much better it is to acquire wisdom than gold." Amen!
1. In what areas of life are you being seduced by the world?
2. How is the world's seduction affecting your relationships?
3. If wisdom fends off attacks from the world, what are you doing to gain wisdom?
4. Do you have believers in your life holding you accountable, keeping you away from all the things that pull you away from God?
