Central Truth

God is our rescuer and redeemer.

Key Verse | Psalm 124:8

Our deliverer is the Lord,
the Creator of heaven and earth.
(Psalm 124:8)

Psalm 124

Our Help Is in the Name of the LORD

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

If it had not been the LORD who was on our side—
    let Israel now say—
if it had not been the LORD who was on our side
    when people rose up against us,
then they would have swallowed us up alive,
    when their anger was kindled against us;
then the flood would have swept us away,
    the torrent would have gone over us;
then over us would have gone
    the raging waters.

Blessed be the LORD,
    who has not given us
    as prey to their teeth!
We have escaped like a bird
    from the snare of the fowlers;
the snare is broken,
    and we have escaped!

Our help is in the name of the LORD,
    who made heaven and earth.

Dive Deeper | Psalm 124

May I have another passage, please? I seem to get the passage that affects my life the most right now. How ironic.
So, I got my head stuck in our stair rail when I was little, and I was certain I was never going to get out. I’m pretty sure I remember my dad sawing the post to release me. I was trapped, and the feeling of being "stuck" was absolutely terrifying to me. Comparing this to verse 7 about the "fowler’s snare" (NIV) is kind of daunting. Imagine having your head in your predator’s mouth with no hope of relief!
Over the years I tried to stay in control and live my life the way I thought it should go. I got myself in situations in which I was screaming for help and relief over and over again. Thank goodness my mom was always available for those therapy sessions. While I loved the talks, I needed more.
We are all human, and we get in situations we don't like. Whether it’s getting out of debt, asking a friend for forgiveness, sharing your faith, or other challenges, we need all the help we can get. We are just too stubborn to ask for it. That’s what Psalm 124 is all about. It tells us, Guess what? You don’t have to do this alone. God is our rescuer and redeemer! In John 16:24 we are assured that if we ask He will answer.
Whatever our fight or struggle, God is ultimately our deliverer, and He must have the glory. The world will still try to hold us in our sin and trouble, but we are God’s people. When we put our trust "in the name of the Lord" (124:8, NIV), we will be delivered and set free. Let us rejoice that our help is from Him who made heaven and earth!

Discussion Questions

1. What are you struggling with?
2. In the moment of distress, who are you crying out to? Is that the only time you consider God?
3. Are you struggling alone or do you allow your friends/community to fight and pray with you?
