Central Truth
By trusting deeply in the Lord, not only do we find security, but we also find freedom.
Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion;
it cannot be upended and will endure forever.
(Psalm 125:1)
1
Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be moved, but abides forever.
2
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the LORD surrounds his people,
from this time forth and forevermore.
3
For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest
on the land allotted to the righteous,
lest the righteous stretch out
their hands to do wrong.
4
Do good, O LORD, to those who are good,
and to those who are upright in their hearts!
5
But those who turn aside to their crooked ways
the LORD will lead away with evildoers!
Peace be upon Israel!
Think of the attributes of those who are like Mount Zion: steady, solid, unshakable. Unfortunately, this is not how I would describe myself on most days.
To carry the mountain metaphor a little further, I would submit that the thing that makes a mountain steadfast is the fact that it is anchored to something larger than itself. Our foundation of faith must be deeply rooted in our relationship with the Father to experience the fullness of His steadfastness. Proverbs 12:3 (NASB) says, “A man will not be established by wickedness, But the root of the righteous will not be moved.”
One of the ways that my lack of trust manifests itself is in placing too much value on what other people think of me. This informs what I wear, how I speak (both in word choice and the manner of my delivery), and really anything that anyone else sees or hears from me.
What wonderful security and freedom is found in trusting deeply in the Lord’s goodness!
Perhaps Edward Mote said it best, when he wrote:
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly trust in Jesus’ Name.
On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand . . . .
1. Are you free to be who God has uniquely created you to be? Why?
2. Are you trusting the Lord in a way that gives you peace?
3. What is keeping you from trusting that deeply?
