Central Truth
Psalm 146 begins and ends in praise to the Lord. In the middle the reader is admonished to trust in God, who remains faithful forever, rather than trusting in man, whose life and plans come to an end.
How blessed is the one whose helper is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord his God,
the one who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them,
who remains forever faithful.
(Psalm 146:5-6)
1
Praise the LORD!
Praise the LORD, O my soul!
2
I will praise the LORD as long as I live;
I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.
3
Put not your trust in princes,
in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.
4
When his breath departs, he returns to the earth;
on that very day his plans perish.
5
Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD his God,
6
who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them,
who keeps faith forever;
7
who executes justice for the oppressed,
who gives food to the hungry.
The LORD sets the prisoners free;
8
the LORD opens the eyes of the blind.
The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down;
the LORD loves the righteous.
9
The LORD watches over the sojourners;
he upholds the widow and the fatherless,
but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.
10
The LORD will reign forever,
your God, O Zion, to all generations.
Praise the LORD!
In 1985 Mark and I wanted a family. We were young, healthy, responsible adults, so we were shocked to learn there was a problem. We tried everything from seeking qualified medical help to creating a mental checklist to prove our readiness to God: buying a house, paying off the car, giving up caffeine, and praying more often. But all our efforts failed to produce a baby.
A few years later, we completed paperwork for an adoption agency, including a letter and photos for expectant mothers so they could learn about us. I stressed about making sure the letter portrayed us in the best possible light. I went to even greater lengths to arrange the perfect photograph. I thought that any birth mother who saw an adorable couple aboard a yacht on the San Francisco bay would have the social worker contact us immediately! I sent the photos off and waited by the phone. I knew my efforts were about to pay off!
Painful months later, we finally received a call notifying us that a birth mother wanted to meet us. On the night of the meeting, we arrived in the city only to discover we'd left at home the address and phone number of the meeting place. We tried calling the agency, but the only number in the phone book was for a hotline that was being answered by a child whose mother was at the grocery store. We drove around aimlessly. Then after an hour, we could only sit and weep, realizing that all our efforts had failed again.
We gave the hotline one last call before returning home. This time, a woman answered who had the information we needed. We arrived at the agency 90 minutes late, red-eyed, me with mascara running down my face, convinced that no birth mother would consider us now.
It turned out that the birth mother had never seen our perfect photo, was not put off by our lateness or appearance, and chose us to parent her child.
When all our human efforts failed, God did not. He is faithful!
Merry Christmas!
1. What events in your life confirm that relying on people (education, wealth, power, skill, charm, strength, connections, fame, promises, networking, personality, influence, appearance, or an impressive resume) leads to disappointment?
2. In what areas of your life have you trusted God in the past and found Him faithful?
3. Psalm 146 mentions specific needs that God will meet: vindication, food, freedom, healing, encouragement, a home, a father, and a spouse. Do you need to place your trust in God for these things?
4. Do you have needs in areas other than those specifically listed in Psalm 146 that you need to turn over to God?
