Central Truth
We are called to be more than just hearers of the Word. We are called to be doers of the Word and to be an example of Jesus to an unbelieving world.
But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. (James 1:22)
1 James, a servant 1 1:1 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion:
Greetings.
2 Count it all joy, my brothers, 2 1:2 Or brothers and sisters. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, the plural Greek word adelphoi (translated brothers) may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters; also verses 16, 19 when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
9 Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, 10 and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass 3 1:10 Or a wild flower he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.
12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 4 1:17 Some manuscripts variation due to a shadow of turning 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
The key verse I chose is my favorite verse. I especially like the way it is written in the NIV: "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." (James 1:22, NIV) Throughout this first chapter, we see many calls to action. For example: find joy in trials and persecution, seek wisdom, persevere, be quick to listen and slow to speak, and, finally, we are called to be doers.
I picture the author saying to a group of people, "I know you are listening and agree with my teachings from the Lord, but who is willing to take action?" That's why I have a picture of this verse on my office wall. I want to be reminded every day that there is more to following Jesus than just hearing His Word. Every decision should be made with that perspective.
The next trick is to make sure our reason for doing what the Word says is more than following rules. I recently asked an unbelieving friend, "Do you think I am more concerned with following rules from the Bible, or do you see my actions as an expression of my love for my Savior?" He answered me, "I think you are 70% rule-following and 30% actions that are an expression of love." I was crushed at first, because I don't want him to think being a Christian is all about rules. I want him to see that I love Jesus so much that I can't help but follow His teachings. Of course, that gave me a great chance to speak truth to him, but mainly it has renewed my spirit in how I handle myself as a believer. This caused me to be more aware of how I represent myself through James 1:22.
How amazing it is that God shows us how we can grow and mature through the most unlikely sources sometimes. I hope you join me today in the struggle of being a doer and not just a hearer.
1. Where in your life are you listening to God's teachings, but are not applying them in your actions?
2. How are you a reflection of Jesus in your daily life?
3. How do you apply the principle in your life of being quick to listen and slow to speak?
4. Why would someone watching you want to know more about Jesus?
WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY
October 8-12 (Hebrews 11-James 2)
Read Hebrews 11.
• What is the definition of faith?
• Is it easy or hard for you to believe things that you cannot see?
Activity: Make a "HALL OF FAITH" chart with four columns (Name, New Testament verses, Old Testament verses, and Act of Faith). Read through each little section of Hebrews 11, writing down the names of the people listed and what their act of faith was. Next, go to the Old Testament and find their story. Take time to read their story and talk about how they showed faith. Record their Old Testament references on your chart. Then, take time to think about people you know. Add their names to your "Hall of Faith" chart and record how they have shown their faith in God.
