Key Verse | Judges 7:4

And the LORD said to Gideon, "The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and anyone of whom I say to you, 'This one shall go with you,' shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, 'This one shall not go with you,' shall not go."

Judges 7-8

Gideon's Three Hundred Men

Then Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was north of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.

The LORD said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained.

And the LORD said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ shall not go.” So he brought the people down to the water. And the LORD said to Gideon, “Every one who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every one who kneels down to drink.” And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was 300 men, but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water. And the LORD said to Gideon, “With the 300 men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand, and let all the others go every man to his home.” So the people took provisions in their hands, and their trumpets. And he sent all the rest of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the 300 men. And the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.

That same night the LORD said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have given it into your hand. 10 But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant. 11 And you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outposts of the armed men who were in the camp. 12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the people of the East lay along the valley like locusts in abundance, and their camels were without number, as the sand that is on the seashore in abundance. 13 When Gideon came, behold, a man was telling a dream to his comrade. And he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian and came to the tent and struck it so that it fell and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.” 14 And his comrade answered, “This is no other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel; God has given into his hand Midian and all the camp.”

15 As soon as Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped. And he returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Arise, for the LORD has given the host of Midian into your hand.” 16 And he divided the 300 men into three companies and put trumpets into the hands of all of them and empty jars, with torches inside the jars. 17 And he said to them, “Look at me, and do likewise. When I come to the outskirts of the camp, do as I do. 18 When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp and shout, ‘For the LORD and for Gideon.’”

Gideon Defeats Midian

19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just set the watch. And they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars that were in their hands. 20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held in their left hands the torches, and in their right hands the trumpets to blow. And they cried out, “A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!” 21 Every man stood in his place around the camp, and all the army ran. They cried out and fled. 22 When they blew the 300 trumpets, the LORD set every man's sword against his comrade and against all the army. And the army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah, 1 7:22 Some Hebrew manuscripts Zeredah as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath. 23 And the men of Israel were called out from Naphtali and from Asher and from all Manasseh, and they pursued after Midian.

24 Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and capture the waters against them, as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan. 25 And they captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. Then they pursued Midian, and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon across the Jordan.

Gideon Defeats Zebah and Zalmunna

Then the men of Ephraim said to him, “What is this that you have done to us, not to call us when you went to fight against Midian?” And they accused him fiercely. And he said to them, “What have I done now in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the grape harvest of Abiezer? God has given into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. What have I been able to do in comparison with you?” Then their anger 2 8:3 Hebrew their spirit against him subsided when he said this.

And Gideon came to the Jordan and crossed over, he and the 300 men who were with him, exhausted yet pursuing. So he said to the men of Succoth, “Please give loaves of bread to the people who follow me, for they are exhausted, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.” And the officials of Succoth said, “Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hand, that we should give bread to your army?” So Gideon said, “Well then, when the LORD has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will flail your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.” And from there he went up to Penuel, and spoke to them in the same way, and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered. And he said to the men of Penuel, “When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.”

10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army, about 15,000 men, all who were left of all the army of the people of the East, for there had fallen 120,000 men who drew the sword. 11 And Gideon went up by the way of the tent dwellers east of Nobah and Jogbehah and attacked the army, for the army felt secure. 12 And Zebah and Zalmunna fled, and he pursued them and captured the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and he threw all the army into a panic.

13 Then Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle by the ascent of Heres. 14 And he captured a young man of Succoth and questioned him. And he wrote down for him the officials and elders of Succoth, seventy-seven men. 15 And he came to the men of Succoth and said, “Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me, saying, ‘Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hand, that we should give bread to your men who are exhausted?’” 16 And he took the elders of the city, and he took thorns of the wilderness and briers and with them taught the men of Succoth a lesson. 17 And he broke down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city.

18 Then he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, “Where are the men whom you killed at Tabor?” They answered, “As you are, so were they. Every one of them resembled the son of a king.” 19 And he said, “They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As the LORD lives, if you had saved them alive, I would not kill you.” 20 So he said to Jether his firstborn, “Rise and kill them!” But the young man did not draw his sword, for he was afraid, because he was still a young man. 21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Rise yourself and fall upon us, for as the man is, so is his strength.” And Gideon arose and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he took the crescent ornaments that were on the necks of their camels.

Gideon's Ephod

22 Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us, you and your son and your grandson also, for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.” 23 Gideon said to them, “I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the LORD will rule over you.” 24 And Gideon said to them, “Let me make a request of you: every one of you give me the earrings from his spoil.” (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.) 25 And they answered, “We will willingly give them.” And they spread a cloak, and every man threw in it the earrings of his spoil. 26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was 1,700 shekels 3 8:26 A shekel was about 2/5 ounce or 11 grams of gold, besides the crescent ornaments and the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian, and besides the collars that were around the necks of their camels. 27 And Gideon made an ephod of it and put it in his city, in Ophrah. And all Israel whored after it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and to his family. 28 So Midian was subdued before the people of Israel, and they raised their heads no more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.

The Death of Gideon

29 Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and lived in his own house. 30 Now Gideon had seventy sons, his own offspring, 4 8:30 Hebrew who came from his own loins for he had many wives. 31 And his concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, and he called his name Abimelech. 32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, at Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

33 As soon as Gideon died, the people of Israel turned again and whored after the Baals and made Baal-berith their god. 34 And the people of Israel did not remember the LORD their God, who had delivered them from the hand of all their enemies on every side, 35 and they did not show steadfast love to the family of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) in return for all the good that he had done to Israel.

Dive Deeper | Judges 7-8

According to Psalm 90:10, by the time you read this I will have approximately 304 weeks of my life left. God has already determined exactly how many to the day (Psalm 139:16). Regardless of whether I have more or less, I want to make sure I never take for granted that I will "naturally" abide with Jesus and be faithful today. I want to walk in His Spirit and not carry out the desires of my flesh (Galatians 5:16).

This is such a great motivation for me as I get up each morning and calibrate my heart to God and His love, forgiveness, and mercy for me. I remind myself of who I am in light of God's adoption of me and His Spirit that resides in me (Romans 8:15).

In Judges 6:15 we see Gideon's humility and recognition that, apart from God, he is nothing. We see the same in Judges 7 as Gideon trusts God completely as He reduces his army from 32,000 down to 300. God uses these 300 men to rout an army of 135,000! This leaves no question that it is God who delivered Israel.

But somewhere along the way Gideon lost focus, became prideful, made an idol of gold, took many wives and concubines, and played the harlot, which became a snare for him and his household. Gideon died. As soon as he was dead, his sons followed his poor example late in his life. They began to worship Baal and did not remember the Lord.

This is sobering for me as I recognize that my past faithfulness will not guarantee my faithfulness today. There are many watching and influenced by my example, especially my kids and grandkids.

Lord, help me seek first your kingdom and your righteousness today. Help me be your man as I love and deepen in intimacy with You and love all the people you bring across my path today. Especially my wife, my kids, my grandkids, my mom, and my mother-in-law. Amen!

This month's memory verse

17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.

– James 3:17

Discussion Questions

1. How are you doing in daily abiding with Jesus and not allowing a drift to complacency? It is never too late to be faithful today, regardless of all your yesterdays!

2. God is constantly doing supernatural things all around us. How are you doing in calibrating your heart to walk by the Spirit and be guided and directed by Him each day? This is the day the Lord has made. Let today be the day you yield to Him. Do the same tomorrow!

3. People are constantly watching what you do more than what you say. How are you doing in being a role model in your example of following Christ? (1 Corinthians 11:1)

Good morning brother Kyle! Thanks for this devo and for all the ways you and the Thompsons love our church. What if I told you that God gives me a winning lottery ticket every day when I wake up? What if I told you this has been the case for many, many years? And what if I told you that most of the time, I took it for granted. I thought I was entitled to it. Eventually I begin to think it was my ability to pick winning lottery numbers. Ridiculous? Of course it is. But that was my attitude. My material winning lottery ticket was being born in Americas in the 20th century to parents that loved me and cared for me. Who provided for me. Who kept me on track and made sure I was cared for. Who made me accountable for education and achievement.

For most of my adult life I considered myself “self-made”. Nobody gave me anything. I earned it. My spiritual winning lottery ticket was a level of pride, sin, and rebellion that ultimately crushed that lie in me into submission. It took that adversity, almost all self-caused, to wake me up. In my mid 50s I realized that I HAD won the lottery…and it was pure luck. There was nothing about me or my ability that had anything to do with it. I also began to see the hand of God in my life in ways that were previously not in my awareness at all. Since then there have been “streams of mercy never ceasing” Like Gideon, my fear exceeded my faith. By a lot. And not without merit. I faced several existential crises in my work and family. In short order it became quite clear that I had no idea what the way out looked like. I can channel a bit of Gideon’s fear of the numerical disadvantage. Midianite forces 135,000. Mine/Gideon’s were 32,000. Or so I thought. God quickly showed me that I had no one with me but Him. And that He was all I needed. From the notes- With 300 men Gideon faced “ a numerical disadvantage made desperate by God’s strategic test.” 135,000 to 300 is a 450:1 ratio. There is no way that would work. And it didn’t because the men and swords weren’t even engaged in the battle after the first round of yelling. The key to this passage for me is Judges 7:2- ‘The LORD said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ ‘ The LORD exposed my naked fear to me. I had to surrender to Him because there was no other choice. He knew that would be what it would take.

From the notes- “"... the narrator leaves the reader with a penetrating message: God must bring His servant to a moment when all human confidence is stripped away, he sits silently in humble adoration of his God as the One who is totally sufficient against all odds to accomplish His divine will. Then and only then is he ready to move forward to taste God's victory, though that victory is no more secure or certain than before." “This record of God's great deliverance of His people illustrates what God can do through one person, who, though weak in faith, is willing to trust and obey Him.” "It is not our responsibility to understand how God is going to keep His word and accomplish His work. It is our responsibility to obey Him and to do what He commands."

The Mideianites were 'without number' so many. And God dealt with them with 'so few' only 300 Another great children song related to Gideon is 'Torches and Trumpets" Torches and trumpets call through the night sending the foes of Jehovah to flight from Giddyup, Giddalong Gideonhttps: http://www.praisegathering.com/Detail/839 And an interesting reenactment of the 'wake up midianites! https://youtu.be/2wrylvHw0-4?t=198

KYLE!!!!!! Another boffo devo, brotherfriend! Thank you so much! God sends Gideon to spy on the Midianite army and overhears the conversation about a guy's dream and the other's interpretation of it. These are two unbelievers, but God has no problem giving both a prophetic dream and the correct interpretation that Gideon "just happens" to overhear. This little detail makes me smile and enlarges my understanding of how wonderfully powerful and sovereign our God is. Those whose minds are dark because they don't know Him are no problem for the God who is light!

Hi fellow Poke! Good to hear you on the podcast. I find it interesting that your grandkids all have king/queen names. That’s awesome! The way God picks His chosen is mind blowing. Nothing special, just people who raise our hands and say, send me Lord. I pray I continue to raise my hand however many weeks I have left.

"This is sobering for me as I recognize that my past faithfulness will not guarantee my faithfulness today." This sentence meant a lot to me because I have never thought about it like that before. Thank you for the reminder of "daily calibrating" our hearts to God.
