Big Idea

Forgetting God's Word is the first step away from faithfulness.

Key Verse | 2 Kings 9:6-7

So he arose and went into the house. And the young man poured the oil on his head, saying to him, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, I anoint you king over the people of the LORD, over Israel. And you shall strike down the house of Ahab your master, so that I may avenge on Jezebel the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the LORD."

2 Kings 9-10

Jehu Anointed King of Israel

Then Elisha the prophet called one of the sons of the prophets and said to him, “Tie up your garments, and take this flask of oil in your hand, and go to Ramoth-gilead. And when you arrive, look there for Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi. And go in and have him rise from among his fellows, and lead him to an inner chamber. Then take the flask of oil and pour it on his head and say, ‘Thus says the LORD, I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and flee; do not linger.”

So the young man, the servant of the prophet, went to Ramoth-gilead. And when he came, behold, the commanders of the army were in council. And he said, “I have a word for you, O commander.” And Jehu said, “To which of us all?” And he said, “To you, O commander.” So he arose and went into the house. And the young man poured the oil on his head, saying to him, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, I anoint you king over the people of the LORD, over Israel. And you shall strike down the house of Ahab your master, so that I may avenge on Jezebel the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the LORD. For the whole house of Ahab shall perish, and I will cut off from Ahab every male, bond or free, in Israel. And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah. 10 And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the territory of Jezreel, and none shall bury her.” Then he opened the door and fled.

11 When Jehu came out to the servants of his master, they said to him, “Is all well? Why did this mad fellow come to you?” And he said to them, “You know the fellow and his talk.” 12 And they said, “That is not true; tell us now.” And he said, “Thus and so he spoke to me, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD, I anoint you king over Israel.’” 13 Then in haste every man of them took his garment and put it under him on the bare 1 9:13 The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain steps, and they blew the trumpet and proclaimed, “Jehu is king.”

Jehu Assassinates Joram and Ahaziah

14 Thus Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi conspired against Joram. (Now Joram with all Israel had been on guard at Ramoth-gilead against Hazael king of Syria, 15 but King Joram had returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds that the Syrians had given him, when he fought with Hazael king of Syria.) So Jehu said, “If this is your decision, then let no one slip out of the city to go and tell the news in Jezreel.” 16 Then Jehu mounted his chariot and went to Jezreel, for Joram lay there. And Ahaziah king of Judah had come down to visit Joram.

17 Now the watchman was standing on the tower in Jezreel, and he saw the company of Jehu as he came and said, “I see a company.” And Joram said, “Take a horseman and send to meet them, and let him say, ‘Is it peace?’” 18 So a man on horseback went to meet him and said, “Thus says the king, ‘Is it peace?’” And Jehu said, “What do you have to do with peace? Turn around and ride behind me.” And the watchman reported, saying, “The messenger reached them, but he is not coming back.” 19 Then he sent out a second horseman, who came to them and said, “Thus the king has said, ‘Is it peace?’” And Jehu answered, “What do you have to do with peace? Turn around and ride behind me.” 20 Again the watchman reported, “He reached them, but he is not coming back. And the driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi, for he drives furiously.”

21 Joram said, “Make ready.” And they made ready his chariot. Then Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah set out, each in his chariot, and went to meet Jehu, and met him at the property of Naboth the Jezreelite. 22 And when Joram saw Jehu, he said, “Is it peace, Jehu?” He answered, “What peace can there be, so long as the whorings and the sorceries of your mother Jezebel are so many?” 23 Then Joram reined about and fled, saying to Ahaziah, “Treachery, O Ahaziah!” 24 And Jehu drew his bow with his full strength, and shot Joram between the shoulders, so that the arrow pierced his heart, and he sank in his chariot. 25 Jehu said to Bidkar his aide, “Take him up and throw him on the plot of ground belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite. For remember, when you and I rode side by side behind Ahab his father, how the LORD made this pronouncement against him: 26 ‘As surely as I saw yesterday the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons—declares the LORD—I will repay you on this plot of ground.’ Now therefore take him up and throw him on the plot of ground, in accordance with the word of the LORD.”

27 When Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled in the direction of Beth-haggan. And Jehu pursued him and said, “Shoot him also.” And they shot him 2 9:27 Syriac, Vulgate (compare Septuagint); Hebrew lacks and they shot him in the chariot at the ascent of Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to Megiddo and died there. 28 His servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his tomb with his fathers in the city of David.

29 In the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab, Ahaziah began to reign over Judah.

Jehu Executes Jezebel

30 When Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it. And she painted her eyes and adorned her head and looked out of the window. 31 And as Jehu entered the gate, she said, “Is it peace, you Zimri, murderer of your master?” 32 And he lifted up his face to the window and said, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two or three eunuchs looked out at him. 33 He said, “Throw her down.” So they threw her down. And some of her blood spattered on the wall and on the horses, and they trampled on her. 34 Then he went in and ate and drank. And he said, “See now to this cursed woman and bury her, for she is a king's daughter.” 35 But when they went to bury her, they found no more of her than the skull and the feet and the palms of her hands. 36 When they came back and told him, he said, “This is the word of the LORD, which he spoke by his servant Elijah the Tishbite: ‘In the territory of Jezreel the dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel, 37 and the corpse of Jezebel shall be as dung on the face of the field in the territory of Jezreel, so that no one can say, This is Jezebel.’”

Jehu Slaughters Ahab's Descendants

Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. So Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria, to the rulers of the city, 3 10:1 Septuagint, Vulgate; Hebrew rulers of Jezreel to the elders, and to the guardians of the sons 4 10:1 Hebrew lacks of the sons of Ahab, saying, “Now then, as soon as this letter comes to you, seeing your master's sons are with you, and there are with you chariots and horses, fortified cities also, and weapons, select the best and fittest of your master's sons and set him on his father's throne and fight for your master's house.” But they were exceedingly afraid and said, “Behold, the two kings could not stand before him. How then can we stand?” So he who was over the palace, and he who was over the city, together with the elders and the guardians, sent to Jehu, saying, “We are your servants, and we will do all that you tell us. We will not make anyone king. Do whatever is good in your eyes.” Then he wrote to them a second letter, saying, “If you are on my side, and if you are ready to obey me, take the heads of your master's sons and come to me at Jezreel tomorrow at this time.” Now the king's sons, seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who were bringing them up. And as soon as the letter came to them, they took the king's sons and slaughtered them, seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets and sent them to him at Jezreel. When the messenger came and told him, “They have brought the heads of the king's sons,” he said, “Lay them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until the morning.” Then in the morning, when he went out, he stood and said to all the people, “You are innocent. It was I who conspired against my master and killed him, but who struck down all these? 10 Know then that there shall fall to the earth nothing of the word of the LORD, which the LORD spoke concerning the house of Ahab, for the LORD has done what he said by his servant Elijah.” 11 So Jehu struck down all who remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, all his great men and his close friends and his priests, until he left him none remaining.

12 Then he set out and went to Samaria. On the way, when he was at Beth-eked of the Shepherds, 13 Jehu met the relatives of Ahaziah king of Judah, and he said, “Who are you?” And they answered, “We are the relatives of Ahaziah, and we came down to visit the royal princes and the sons of the queen mother.” 14 He said, “Take them alive.” And they took them alive and slaughtered them at the pit of Beth-eked, forty-two persons, and he spared none of them.

15 And when he departed from there, he met Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him. And he greeted him and said to him, “Is your heart true to my heart as mine is to yours?” And Jehonadab answered, “It is.” Jehu said, 5 10:15 Septuagint; Hebrew lacks Jehu said “If it is, give me your hand.” So he gave him his hand. And Jehu took him up with him into the chariot. 16 And he said, “Come with me, and see my zeal for the LORD.” So he 6 10:16 Septuagint, Syriac, Targum; Hebrew they had him ride in his chariot. 17 And when he came to Samaria, he struck down all who remained to Ahab in Samaria, till he had wiped them out, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke to Elijah.

Jehu Strikes Down the Prophets of Baal

18 Then Jehu assembled all the people and said to them, “Ahab served Baal a little, but Jehu will serve him much. 19 Now therefore call to me all the prophets of Baal, all his worshipers and all his priests. Let none be missing, for I have a great sacrifice to offer to Baal. Whoever is missing shall not live.” But Jehu did it with cunning in order to destroy the worshipers of Baal. 20 And Jehu ordered, “Sanctify a solemn assembly for Baal.” So they proclaimed it. 21 And Jehu sent throughout all Israel, and all the worshipers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left who did not come. And they entered the house of Baal, and the house of Baal was filled from one end to the other. 22 He said to him who was in charge of the wardrobe, “Bring out the vestments for all the worshipers of Baal.” So he brought out the vestments for them. 23 Then Jehu went into the house of Baal with Jehonadab the son of Rechab, and he said to the worshipers of Baal, “Search, and see that there is no servant of the LORD here among you, but only the worshipers of Baal.” 24 Then they 7 10:24 Septuagint he (compare verse 25) went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings.

Now Jehu had stationed eighty men outside and said, “The man who allows any of those whom I give into your hands to escape shall forfeit his life.” 25 So as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, Jehu said to the guard and to the officers, “Go in and strike them down; let not a man escape.” So when they put them to the sword, the guard and the officers cast them out and went into the inner room of the house of Baal, 26 and they brought out the pillar that was in the house of Baal and burned it. 27 And they demolished the pillar of Baal, and demolished the house of Baal, and made it a latrine to this day.

Jehu Reigns in Israel

28 Thus Jehu wiped out Baal from Israel. 29 But Jehu did not turn aside from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin—that is, the golden calves that were in Bethel and in Dan. 30 And the LORD said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in my eyes, and have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart, your sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.” 31 But Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the LORD, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn from the sins of Jeroboam, which he made Israel to sin.

32 In those days the LORD began to cut off parts of Israel. Hazael defeated them throughout the territory of Israel: 33 from the Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from Aroer, which is by the Valley of the Arnon, that is, Gilead and Bashan. 34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehu and all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 35 So Jehu slept with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son reigned in his place. 36 The time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.

Dive Deeper | 2 Kings 9-10

My biggest takeaway from 2 Kings 9 and 10? God does not allow our disobedience to go unpunished.

Let's rewind. Ahab and Jezebel were notoriously wicked rulers of Israel. They were idolaters who worshiped the false god Baal. They persecuted true prophets of the LORD. And they were covetous to the point of having their neighbor Naboth murdered so they could steal his property.

We've actually known that God's justice was coming to Ahab and Jezebel for a while. In 1 Kings 19:16-18, God commands for Jehu to be king over Israel and an instrument of His wrath against the followers of Baal. In 1 Kings 21:21-24, God asserts that the entire house of Ahab and Jezebel will be wiped out for their sins.

Now let's look at today's key verse. Jehu is anointed king and told, "you shall strike down the house of Ahab your master, so that I may avenge on Jezebel the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the LORD." (2 Kings 9:7) And then we see God enact His promised judgment through Jehu. God uses Jehu to bring an end to Joram (a son of Ahab), Jezebel, and all the other remaining descendants of Ahab. Jehu also eliminates all the worshipers of Baal and destroys Baal's temple. God's righteous anger against the sins of Ahab and Jezebel is thus satisfied.

So how does this apply to us? In our own ways, we all have sinned and disobeyed God. We've worshiped idols like money, relationships, and comfort. We've imperfectly followed God's Word. We've wanted our neighbor's stuff and been unloving to people.

God tells us our disobedience will not go unpunished (Ephesians 5:5-6). But the good news is that God offers us a redeemer. God offers to reconcile us to Himself through Jesus, who received the punishment on the cross that we deserve so that we can receive His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). You can be saved from sin and its penalty and have eternal life with God because of Jesus. Praise God!

This month's memory verse

Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.

– Proverbs 3:5-6

Discussion Questions

1. Have you ever asked God to show you your sin? Take some time to pray Psalm 139:23-24: "Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!"

2. What do you think a person has to do to have a relationship with God? Is there anything that you can do about your sin?

3. Do you believe Jesus can and has redeemed you from your sin? How can you make the redemption He offers a reality in your life? Talk through this with your community.

Good morning, Samuel! Love this conviction from your devo, “So how does this apply to us? In our own ways, we all have sinned and disobeyed God. We've worshiped idols like money, relationships, and comfort. We've imperfectly followed God's Word. We've wanted our neighbor's stuff and been unloving to people.” Q1. Psalm 139 is a regular “slow-read” for me. Daily if I can. Have I read Romans 3:23? Yes, I have. Fully downloaded meaning? Not until a few years ago when I came across the verse reference and it hit me right in the face. I used the Olive Tree Bible app to link to Strong’s dictionary. My hope was that there was some flexibility in the Greek. It turns out that “all” in Greek means “all, any, every, the whole”. Oops. No escape hatch there. Roundabout the same time we saw an amazing video at the Good Friday service. I had not really processed the full meaning of the atonement of Jesus. This was really eye opening. So I reprise it. https://www.godtube.com/watch/?v=W7ZDZGNX#brid_cp_gt-video As part of this process I learned the incredible blessing of confession, (which needs to be nearly constant for me). 1 John 1:9 and James 5:16 are the big time GO-TO verses for me. Embracing the promises in these two verses helps me and Amy keep accounts as short as possible. It has had a really positive effect for us. And we were doing pretty well before then. Q2. How to have a relationship with God? I can answer for myself using my basic understanding. Another Reprise- First, I had to answer the Three Big Questions; -Who is God? -Who Am I? -Why am I here? Then accept the truth about the Three Big Lies -God is not good. -His Word is not true. -Sin is not a big deal. Then I was ready to embrace God’s plan of redemption for me- which included an ever deepening and intimate relationship with Jesus. His Word, His Spirit and His people walk with me continually to help me stay on mission. Q3. Making redemption for sin a reality? The abortion Amy and I had in February 1982 was the giant ball of toxic waste in my stomach for 34 years. It was also a dark cloud that followed us around and consistently rained down upon us. Co-leading men’s abortion recovery in 2016 and the following years was the first big step in the process of healing and redemption. Somehow, I knew It would not be as easy as a one-and-done trip through the curriculum. It took several times through plus walking with other men as they processed their own reality. Also, I asked a very learned friend gifted in worship music to bless me by putting together a playlist of music on forgiveness. That put me over the top. I still listen to it. I am very confident it will bless you all too. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/forgiveness/pl.3ac6f92f2cfb472eb3b474f5d25ee6c4

Jehu has my attention in this passage. His actions remind me of the truth statement- “Partial obedience is disobedience”. As contrasted with Eugene Peterson’s premise in his book "A Long Obedience in the Same Direction" https://a.co/d/3omQ7Em My gut reaction in reading of his overstretch is to wonder what is so hard about doing what God says? The Mosaic Law is clear. God’s instructions directly to him were clear. Kudos for the Ba’al wipeout but the while golden calf issue makes me wonder what he is thinking. Given the apostasy maybe he did not know about Exodus 32? Seems unlikely. Pretty quickly the Holy Spirit convicts me of spiritual pride and points out my own long list of “golden calves” that I don’t destroy. The notes offer this helpful comment- "Despite his attacks against Baalism, Jehu does not lead the nation into separatist Yahwism. He allows the worship instituted by Jeroboam to continue. In effect, then, he expels the foreign religion (Baalism) in favor of the long- standing Israelite state religion begun by Jeroboam. Apparently, he believes reform beyond the elimination of Ahab's children, Ahab's wife, and Ahab's religion, that is, what secures his power, does not concern him. Indeed he acts as the instrument of punishment against the corrupt Omride dynasty, but he does not operate out of Elijah-like motives. Rather, he is, like Syria, Assyria, and Babylon, an instrument that punishes but exhibits few personal moral strengths. Israel is now back to where it was before Ahab and Jezebel assumed leadership, but it has certainly not come back to the Lord." “God blessed Jehu for eliminating the line of Ahab and Baalism. However, Jehu went too far by killing the nobles, and he did not go far enough in that he allowed the cult of Jeroboam to continue. Furthermore, he was not careful to obey the Mosaic Law with all his heart (v. 31). Consequently, God cut his line off eventually, and Israel lost much Transjordanian territory to Hazael, king of Aram (vv. 32-33).” Interestingly enough his spiritual orientation to “partial obedience” seems to have had a very negative impact on his rule- "Jehu's zeal to rid the land of Omri's house was not matched by his capacity to rule. His twenty-eight years as king were marked by unrest and turmoil, with serious social and economic abuses rife among the people. This fact is evidenced especially by the writings of Amos and Hosea, both prophets to Israel who wrote about one-half century after Jehu's rule. The abuses of which they speak had existed during his time."

And the Lord said to him, “Call his name Jezreel, for in just a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel. Hosea 1:4 And the Lord said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in my eyes, and have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart, your sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.” 2 Kings 10:30 The LORD has nothing bad to say about how Jehu has handled His business. It’s quite few generations later before it’s revealed through Hosea that the house of Jehu will be punished for the blood Jezreel and in the process the kingdom of Israel will end. The names of Hosea’s children, Jezreel, No Mercy, and Not My People. Who they looked like is known from 2 Kings 9-10. It’s sort of like a conversation is going on between Hosea 1 and this section of Kings. “Call her name No Mercy, for I will no more have mercy on the house of Israel, to forgive them at all. But I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and I will save them by the Lord their God. I will not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen.” Hosea 1:6-7 What could be a visual of being saved in the manor of Hosea’s description? 2 Kings 6:8-23 checks all the boxes. What doesn’t look anything like 2 Kings 6:8-23? 2 Kings 9-10 checks all the boxes.

Thanks for your devo, Samuel. Today's reading is another one that makes us wince. Jehu does well to wipe out the worship of Baal and fulfill God's prophecies concerning Ahab and Jezebel and their downline, but what's up with leaving Jeroboam's state religion intact? I think about how the Holy Spirit shines His light on dark areas of deception and captivity (especially when one is going through re:generation) but we can be content with only dealing with the first issues He reveals before sliding back into the mindset of, "Well, that's good enough. I made some progress, good for me." Today I pray for myself and for all us JTJ fam, "Lord, please shine Your light on any areas of our lives that are like Jehu's cooperation with the worship of the golden calves. Convict me--convict us--of any un-repented sin habits that make YOU wince."

Elijah was told Elisha Jehu and Hazeal would be sent and they may correspong to the wind quake and fire but God's real work in some sense is in the still small voice Spoiler alert!! It was a mess with Ahab's daughter marrying a king of Judah and eventually trying to kill the royal kiddos and upsurp the throne. Between Jeru and Athaliah wiping out descendents of the kings, there will be a clean sweep of the royal descendents )almost) of both the northern and southern kingdoms. Jehu and Hazael were pretty violent and although God sent them for judgement, it is great there was a qualifier that God was not in the earthquake, wind and fire. but was in the still small voice, which may be God working quietly through the 7000 faithful to Him. Was Elisha the wind (for the spirit or the quake) and was this a reminder God isn't always mainly in the spectacular but in the Spirit quietly moving. God spectacularly saved a generation from Egypt and gave them the law in the Exodus but in Psalms 95:10 God warned us and repeated in the New Testament He loathed that generation for 40 years because they didn't follow him and 'did not know His ways' despite the law handed down to them by Moses. Today if you 'hear is voice' through the word consider that.

1. Yes, I ask God to show me how to do things right when I know I am screwing up. Prayer: “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everylasting !” Amen. 2. The person should be responsible for their respective actions and ideas. The person should. not intentionally hurt anyone. The person should be positive and do their best for themselves and when interacting with others. The person should make time to listen to God’s word at church and make time to read God’s word in the Bible. The person should use what they learn from God in approaching everything they do. If I sin and need to correct it, I admit it to God. I ask God for forgiveness. And I ask God to show me His way so I don’t make mistakes if the potential sin returns. 3. Yes, I believe Jesus can help redeem me from sin if I sin. Jesus’ efforts become reality because when Jesus’ ideas are available, I read them, listen to them, and apply what I learn from them in daily life. My community agrees Jesus is valuable.
